Life & Work with S.G. Blaise

Today we’d like to introduce you to S.G. Blaise.

S.G. Blaise

Hi S.G., can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My writing journey started when I wrote my first story at ten, inspired by a nightmare that I had to take control over. Despite that experience, I wasn’t an avid reader until age thirteen, when I picked up the book my dad had been recommending to me for years. I read it standing by the bookcase within a few hours. As the years passed, I focused more on getting the education I needed for a day job that could support my writing habit.

In 2001, I moved to Boston and realized that twelve years of passive English translated into very little active knowledge. I could hardly speak a word, let alone write a story in English. I thought my dream of writing was over. We were on a cross-country road trip through Europe when an amazing idea came to me in Austria at midnight. I wrote it down, with the only illumination coming from my phone. It took a year before I mustered the courage to write.

I spent six years learning the writing craft and polishing my story until it was ready to be published. Since then, I have continued to write and publish a book each year. It’s a dream come true!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Each writing journey can differ from one to another. I think one of the hardest lessons I learned when I started out writing the first book was patience. Not knowing when the book would be ready for publishing added a new level of uncertainty that was difficult to accept. Once I started enjoying the journey and celebrating small achievements along the way, my focus shifted from the unknown. Finding what works for you is essential to be successful what whichever passion you follow.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Sci-Fi/Fantasy author of the award-winning book series the Last Lumenian. I’m so honored and proud that my first book, The Last Lumenian, has over 20 award wins and honors, including the Grand Prize win in the 2022 CIBA competition. The main hero, Lilla, struggles with claustrophobia-induced panic attacks, yet she overcomes them to achieve her goal at the end. This struggle conveys the message that you don’t have to be perfect to be a hero.

Writing The Last Lumenian series is not only my passion but a dream come true. This series is especially important to me because it has elements of female empowerment. Part of the reason I wrote this story is to create a role model for girls everywhere. To accept their strengths and flaws because they are both a part of who they are. Knowing that they don’t have to be perfect to be the hero of their lives. To find opportunities and seize it. To inspire my readers to follow their dreams.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
The Covid-19 crisis taught me to follow my passions no matter what because life is unpredictable. We often make excuses to avoid trying new things, but facing our fears and doing it anyway can lead to amazing possibilities. Discovering what you love to do and following it for as long as you can will make each day brighter.
