Life & Work with Sally Kelly

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sally Kelly.

Hi Sally, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started Esquay after an amazing trip back home to Kenya after living in San Diego for a while. Having just gotten out of the military I was craving something different and couldn’t wait to reconnect experience the beautiful culture I grew up with. I spent a lot of time shopping in the local markets there and connected with so many amazing vendors. I loved the vibrant colors in everything. I wanted to buy everything! Every single piece of jewelry was so unique to me, and I had couldn’t wait to style it and wear it. When it was time for me to come back to my second home San Diego, I knew I wanted to bring this beautiful pieces of jewelry and art back with me. I just knew someone else would love them as much as I did, and I wanted to share this with the world. Or even just refresh someone’s memory of a trip they might have taken to Africa and every step of it has been very fulfilling.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I am overwhelmed and truly grateful for the support I’ve gotten but nothing is always a smooth road. The main struggle I’ve encountered is my jewelry and art is so unique and not what you see in mainstream fashion, so it’s been harder to get everyone on board. But this is what makes it so beautiful. I find unique pieces from all over and bring it directly here to share with everyone to make it their own.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Thank you so much for supporting me. When I’m not obsessing over beautiful art pieces and jewelry, I am a nurse helping people whenever I can. I am also in school to be a mental health practitioner. My time in the military as a medic has to be my proudest moment as it was a very humbling and life-changing moment for me. I learnt so many skills that have influenced me to this point in my life.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I feel like most times in life we do have to take risks but if you’re passionate and put in the work to back it up is what really sets you apart.
