Life & Work with Sebastian Fowler of Ocean Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sebastian Fowler.

Hi Sebastian, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Sebastian Fowler, my friends call me, “Seabass”.

I was born in Connecticut in 1993, & I moved to San Diego at 19 with plans to be a pro BMX rider. Turns out, not a lot of money in Bike Tricks. I did make a good batch of friends though & have had over a decade of incredible adventures while diving into a multitude of mediums.

Over the course of the last 10 years or so, I have; scored the Cover of a BMX Magazine (DIG BMX), become a self taught published photographer, become a self-taught Musician & Producer (wrote, recorded, mixed & released my first Solo-LP during Covid), wrote, produced, directed, & edited a Documentary which was nominated for two film-festivals in Australia, DJ’d at Burning Man, & among other things I was the first BMX Rider to cross the Continental United States solo. Also, during that trip I was the first Stand-Up Comedian to do a “Coast to Coast Tour” by Bicycle. It was mainly “Open-Mic” nights, however, I ended up securing a spot on “Kill Tony”, & the episode that night ended up being the very first Episode of the Series on Netflix!

I love to play Drums down by the Seawall in Ocean Beach on the weekends. I love to go out to Comedy Clubs all over the city. I am thankful for all the kind and wonderful people I’ve met over the years. I love my community & am very grateful to call San Diego my home!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The puzzle box of life often loses a few pieces along the way, that doesn’t mean you can’t make out the big picture though. San Diego is a tough economy, lord knows I have had a lot of different jobs in this city. I do do whatever it takes to pay the bills & keep the lights on. I moved a lot during my childhood. I lived in over 20 different houses before I was 18 years old. To know I have been in the same place in Ocean Beach for over eight years warms my heart because it’s the longest I’ve ever lived anywhere in my whole life. Not only that, I get to share it with my Cat & my Dog. Sometimes they can cause great distress, I would do whatever I can to take care of my boys though. As long as you keep your head up & keep moving forward, the journey doesn’t stop so you can’t let the negativity stop you.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As stated in previous bubbles, I am an artist with a broad sense of a “clear cut path”. I just love to make things, I always have. I mainly focus on what’s in front of me & I love learning new techniques and tricks to step up the game. Whether it’s StandUp, Music, Poetry, Painting, Photography, etc., if you just keep doing it & don’t let the falls keep you down, you will never know what you’re truly capable of until you try!

I specialize in; Standup Comedy, Photography (Event, Action, Portrait & Abstract), Music (Percussion, Vocals), Video Production (Almost 10 years of YouTube), & BMX.

In extreme sports I am most known for being the first BMX rider to cross the country, for the 2020 DIG BMX Cover, or for “Bike Surfing” down B-Street (A famous steep hill in Downtown San Diego), and in Standup Comedy I am most proud of my notable moment on “Kill Tony” during their Netflix Debut.

I can confidently say I am the only BMX-Surfing, Photo-Taking, Joke-Telling, Movie-Making, Vinyl-Spinning guy out there on this big, blue, beautiful space rock.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
If you have a dream deep down inside of you, no matter how silly it may seem, follow it through. Don’t let it fester inside you collecting dust as life goes by. Grab it, take hold of it, and run with it. Things are only unbelievable until somebody believes hard enough. The only person who can stop you from living your life to its utmost potential, is you. So don’t wait until tomorrow, because there is no such thing.
