Today we’d like to introduce you to Smile Mortis.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a Queer Latinx Horror Drag Artist, pronouns They/Them in Drag or He/they out of Drag. I started my love for Drag through makeup especially SFX makeup seen in Horror movies. I began to dabble in body/face painting and SFX makeup in highschool and it was always a passion of mine to express my artistry and someday work on horror films as a makeup artist. I have always had a love for alternative/goth/metal music as well and had been in a few bands growing up and wanting to pursue music as well. I have had many passions that I am able to tie into being a Drag Artist but mainly the music and makeup artistry is what ties it all together. I want to be a my own walking Horror movie.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely an obstacle I have faced is the whole choosing if you’re a drag QUEEN or KING. There is clearly and has always been a stigma that drag is only supposed to be feminine illusion but it has evolved into much more than that. I am a drag artist as I do not identify with either king or queen. I like to dwell in the realm in between both and have more of an androgynous type of aesthetic. There is an obstacle of not being booked or perceived as a real performer because of this construct of deciding but it won’t stop me. Although sometimes I might present more feminine or more masculine in my looks I am always just a monster that lives under your bed.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am currently a makeup artist who works for MAC and have recently started working in the beauty industry for about two years now. Before that I worked/work in fast food (I have two jobs). But was also going to school and have a degree in Forensics for Crime Scene Investigation. It is truly a passion of mine and something I am actually good at academically because every other subject is honestly not my forte. But yes my Forensic journey has been very fun and I’ve had some great opportunities it is something that I want to still pursue and either want to work on horror films for special efffects makeup or be a CSI.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was pretty shy, kept to myself, serious, didn’t care what others thought, and very I would say unexpressive with emotions. Being called the “kid who never smiles” in highschool plays a part in my name which is a whole other story time. But a lot of people always told me once they got to know me I was funny so I like to play into that and add it to my drag aesthetic as being a clown at times I mean my makeup does scream “want a balloon?”. But my interest always included music, horror movies, photography, makeup, video games. I like to use drag to express all of those things in someway.
Pricing:
- A lot of work goes into what drag performers do and it is always courteous to ask, I do not have specific pricing but I do know my worth
