Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia Lesberg.
Hi Sophia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My love for makeup and hairstyling started at a young age. In high school, I was always the friend everyone came to for makeup, eyebrow shaping, updos – you name it. What I loved most wasn’t just the artistry, though. It was seeing someone’s face completely light up when they looked in the mirror. That feeling never gets old. I realized early on that there was something really special about helping people feel more confident through something I created.
As my senior year came to an end, I realized a traditional four-year university wasn’t the path I wanted to take. Looking back, I think I’d known that for a while. I was fortunate to have a family member in the industry who believed in me and showed me what was possible with the right training and a lot of hard work. That encouragement gave me the confidence to enroll at Joe Blasco Makeup School the following fall.
At Blasco, I was immersed in every aspect of makeup artistry. From beauty and bridal to high fashion, runway, and even special effects. It was an incredible experience that gave me a strong foundation and prepared me to jump straight into the industry.
That was back in 2009, and I’ve been incredibly grateful to spend the last 17 years doing what I love. Every job is different, every client has a unique story, and I still get that same feeling I had in high school when someone sees themselves in the mirror and smiles.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like any small business owner, there have been slow seasons, economic ups and downs, and the uncertainty that comes with being freelance. One of the biggest changes I’ve had to adapt to has been the use of social media for marketing purposes. When I started my career in 2009, your work spoke for itself through referrals, networking, and a strong portfolio. Today, being a great artist is only part of the job. You also have to be a content creator, marketer, photographer, video editor, and social media manager. Social media has created amazing opportunities, but it has also made the industry much more competitive. There are incredibly talented artists everywhere, and it’s easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself to everyone else. I’ve had to remind myself that building a lasting career is about consistency, professionalism, and always going above and beyond for every client, not so much about having the trendiest Instagram reel.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in bridal, commercial, corporate, editorial, and on-camera beauty. Every client and every project is different, and that’s one of the things I love most about my career. Whether I’m helping a bride on her wedding day, preparing talent for a national commercial, or teaching someone how to feel more confident with makeup, my goal is always the same: to help people look and feel like the very best version of themselves.
I’m most proud of the trust I’ve built with my clients over the years. Many have become repeat clients or have referred their friends and family, which is the greatest compliment I could receive.
What truly sets me apart isn’t just my technical skills, it’s my ability to connect with people. I genuinely care about making every client feel comfortable, heard, and confident. Hair and makeup is a personal experience, and I strive to create a calm, supportive environment where people can relax and enjoy the process.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I’ve always been creative and detail-oriented, and I was naturally drawn to anything beauty-related. I grew up in a family with a lot of amazing women, and some of my favorite childhood memories are of watching my mom, grandma, and aunts sit at their vanities doing their makeup. I was fascinated by the ritual of it. I loved to watch the transformation and see the confidence it seemed to give them. Looking back, it’s no surprise that I ended up pursuing makeup as a career. Even as a kid, I was always the friend doing everyone’s makeup, shaping eyebrows, or helping with hair before dances and special events. It’s something I’ve genuinely loved for as long as I can remember.
