Life & Work with Stacey Westbrook of Lemongrass Salon Encinitas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacey Westbrook.

Hi Stacey, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey into the world of skincare began in high school, where I faced the dreaded battle of acne. It was brutal, and my parents, though well-meaning, didn’t quite know how to help. They offered suggestions like drinking aloe vera and using products from an MLM they were involved in—none of which did the trick. Desperate for a solution, I took matters into my own hands. I got a job and paid an angry Russian nurse to exfoliate and extract my skin all through high school. I also invested in a benzoyl peroxide cleanser that left my skin dry but was a welcome trade-off for the level 2 and 3 acne I had. Anything was better than that!

Over the years, I learned to manage my skin better ( proper homecare is a must0),and developed a routine that included regular visits to an esthetician. I started with Jan Marini for years (so good!), before exploring PCA, Eminence, Circadia, NeoGenesis, Osmosis, and, of course, Aveda—I now work at an Aveda salon called Lemongrass in Encinitas. I firmly believe that it’s perfectly fine to mix and match products rather than stick to just one line.

Growing up in Orange County and later moving to the Bay Area, I found myself working for my first dot com. However, corporate America just wasn’t my thing. I went to night school and earned my esthetic license in 2003. I juggled my job at Sun Microsystems (after our dot com was purchased) during the day and ran my skincare business across the street at a hair salon at night. It was beautiful energizing and chaotic.

In the beginning, I thought I had to offer everything in one facial session—layering treatments like warm towels, microdermabrasion, oxygen therapy, and various energetic techniques. I quickly realized I was overwhelming both myself and my clients Eventually, I found my rhythm and focused my practice on acne treatment for over ten years.

As my own skin began to change, my focus in the treatment room evolved as well. As a menopausal woman, I’ve experienced the transformative journey of aging. It’s fascinating to witness how my skin has shifted from oily and acne-prone to a more delicate dry and multifaceted version. This natural change inspired me to delve deeper into skin barrier health and embrace the unique beauty aging brings.

Now, my mission is to teach others to love and accept their skin, no matter what changes they go through. It’s essential to nurture and celebrate that journey. I’m passionate about sharing what I learn, empowering others to feel confident in their skin at every stage of life.

If you find yourself exploring options like Botox, facelifts, or laser treatments, I wholeheartedly celebrate that choice for you! But if your focus is on simply moisturizing and applying SPF, that’s perfectly valid too. My goal is to support your unique skincare process, regardless of where you fall on that spectrum. I want everyone to feel empowered, valued, and never less than, no matter the skincare decisions they make.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The path to establishing my skincare career wasn’t exactly difficult it was more a juggling act.

Establishing corporate life with the budding skincare business was a challenge. Working at Sun Microsystems during the day while running my business at night required coordinated effort. I was navigating the demands of a corporate job and my ambition to build a clientele in my salon. Finding that balance was tough; there were days when I felt like I was doing everything half-heartedly, stretched too thin to give my best to either role.

Learning the ins and outs of the business world added another layer of complexity. I quickly realized that running a skincare practice required more than just passion; I had to deal with taxes, retail licensing, and the fine print of various regulations. It was daunting! There were moments when I thought, “What have I gotten myself into?” The learning curve was steep, but I had the support of others in the industry.

Then, there were the inevitable stops and starts. I would occasionally have to pause my business to focus on work or personal commitments, which felt frustrating. However, those pauses gave me the time to reflect and refine my approach, ensuring that when I returned, I was more focused and determined.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
In my work, I specialize in skincare and wellness, with a particular focus on the aging process and skin barrier health. As I navigate this chapter of my life as an older woman, I’ve dedicated myself to understanding the unique changes our skin undergoes and sharing that knowledge with others. I’m known for fostering an environment of acceptance and empowerment, encouraging individuals to love their skin at every stage, whether they prefer advanced treatments or simply moisturizing and using SPF.

What I’m most proud of is my ability to connect with individuals on a personal level, guiding them through their own skincare journeys and helping them embrace their natural beauty. I aim to support them without judgment, ensuring that everyone feels valued and understood, regardless of their choices or experiences.

What sets me apart is my authentic approach, rooted in my own experiences and the continuous journey of learning. I believe that skincare isn’t just about products—it’s about fostering confidence and a positive relationship with ourselves.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I love a good collab! First and foremost, I welcome individuals to join me in my skincare and wellness practice, where we can explore personalized approaches to skin health, relaxation, and self-acceptance. Whether through one-on-one sessions, group seminars, or community events, I believe in creating spaces where everyone feels empowered to embrace their unique choices.

Collaboration is something I value. If you’re interested in exploring the intersections of skincare and spirituality, I’d love to connect with fellow wellness practitioners, healers, or educators who share a passion for people. This could lead to creative workshops, joint events, or even online content that promotes well-being and acceptance.

As for support, spreading the word about the work I do is immensely helpful. Sharing experiences or insights from our sessions can inspire others to prioritize their own self-care and wellness. Additionally, I appreciate feedback and ideas from my community, as it helps me grow and refine my offerings continuously.
