Life & Work with Taryn Smith of Bay Park/Clairemont

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taryn Smith

Hi Taryn, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
After moving to Southern California, I discovered my love for surfing—spending every free moment catching waves and soaking in the coastal lifestyle. One night over cocktails with friends at Part Time Lover in North Park, inspiration struck: why not combine my passion for surfing with my creativity? That’s when the idea was born to transform surfboards into modern art pieces. By blending textures, neutral tones, I create simple yet striking statements designed to elevate home decor with a touch of coastal flair. Each piece tells a story of the ocean and the beauty of simplicity. As a new business, I’m just starting to grow and get my name out there, so spread the word and join me on this journey!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I first started selling these boards, I was only posting on Facebook Marketplace. I’ve since branched out to create my own platform and social media which has been a learning curve in itself! I’m trying to find the best ways to find my target market and really want to get more out there in the community, so you may catch me at some local beach spots (thinking Tourmaline!) selling these in the parking lot on a Sunday post-surf session!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
By day, I work a normal 9-5… But outside of work, I love interior design and thrifting furniture and art. I’m most drawn to textured art where it’s something you can display in your home at a large scale without it being too loud. We have a lot of large blank walls in my home and most of the blank spaces are filled with different variations of large textured designs and canvases. I also have a passion for sustainability, specifically taking something old and making it new again. I’d much rather find a piece that is about to be thrown out (like a surfboard or old canvas) and revitalize it and give it a second life! Nice things don’t have to be expensive, and I have found I’m much more proud and excited about a thrifted find rather than buying something new!

What’s next?
For this specifically, I’m hoping to expand beyond surfboards and incorporate to large, statement canvases (so be on the look out for some new designs if you are looking to fill some space in your home!)

Longer term, I’d love to source sustainable surf products all over the world and offer them through my platforms. I’m planning some trips to surf towns down in Mexico this year to see what all is out there, and also to be a beach bum, drink a Pina Colada, and surf! Excited to offer sustainability in a new and creative way, longer term!
