Life & Work with Tre’ Johnson of Carlsbad

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tre’ Johnson

Hi Tre’, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Tre’ Johnson. I’m a San Diego photographer and creative.

I surf, climb, ride motorcycles and I’m always following my excitements. I love going on adventures around the world and experience life to the fullest. I have a niche for being organized, and an eye for creativity.

I graduated college with a BS in Business Management with an emphasis in Entrepreneurial Marketing from California State University San Marcos.

I love both photo and video. I started shooting photography when I was just a teenager. Since then I’ve worked with many different brands, people, events and products. I’ve also completed courses where I learned the craft of developing film in the darkroom by hand old-school style, which is super cool to know where it all started from.

I shoot with two different cameras with two completely different looks. My Canon r6 is my everyday all around weapon of choice, however I also love to shoot my Minolta Maxxum 650si film. Check out some of my work at:

I am the happiest when I am working with people and bringing their visions to life. I’m always looking forward to doing something new.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In my experience, the road is almost never smooth.

Sometimes in life you get lucky but it’s pretty rare. I’d day just good old fashioned hard work and proper communication has lead to pretty much all of my positive outcomes.

Just because you do something that you love doesn’t meant its always smooth sailing.
In fact, I think that sort of defines it in a way. When I am faced with a task thats either new or unfamiliar, a different part of me comes out.

That’s sort of when I feel like the best version of me because I don’t have past experiences to fall back on.
Just raw, unfiltered, in your face, reality. Take it as it comes and make something happen worth wile. No reason to throw a piss party just understand that these are the cards you are delt and run with them the best you can.

If you have this open approach to life and challenges, a lot of the times, you might end up surprising yourself. Like “damn, hell yeah I just did that on the fly”.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Honestly, at this time, I am not a full time photographer.
I actually work in the adult trade for my day job – mostly doing sales, marketing and communications.

Any photographer (if they are being honest) will tell you that there are some serious hi’s an lows with this career.
Unless you work for a brand or agency where the work is steady and repetitive, photography for the most part is an art form, and not a business. Especially if you don’t want to get roped into doing weddings every weekend.

However, I’m looking for that to change one day where I can put more efforts into art and creation in general.

I think what sets me apart, is just open communication without ego. As the photographer, sometimes you may not agree with what the client is exactly looking for, but in the end, it’s not about you. It’s all about finding and capturing what they need and delivering it in a timely matter.

How do you think about happiness?
There’s only really a few things that make me truly happy.

1. My wife. She’s amazing and a gift from God himself.
2. My family and my dogs.
3. The ocean – specifically surfing.
4. Food.
5. New experiences and excitement.
