Life & Work with Tyler Free of Mission valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Free

Hi Tyler, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started in San Diego just making t shirts. Doing heat press, vinyl etc. I was really just learning as I go and from experience. Fast forward I take a class at San Diego continuing education for sewing. Once I took that class everything seemed to click. I was able to finally execute some of the ideas I had in my head. Through the years I’ve learned that as long as your moving and seeking improvement, your art will soon reach the people it’s suppose to little by little

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of my favorite quotes is “A smooth sea, never made a skillful sailor”. The road has been far from smooth but it has made me skillful. Of course in the beginning the challenge was learning how to actually make clothes. Then after learning to make clothes, it was learning how to make the clothes that I want to make. As an entrepreneur, the word struggle is synonymous. Everyday presents new challenges to overcome. One of the biggest struggles that myself and I’m sure others face is keeping faith in yourself when things are slow are not going your way. I’ve been able to continuously overcome doubt by reminding myself why I started, and where I was when I started compared to where I’m at now. When you look back at all you’ve accomplished, it reinvigorates the fire within you to keep going

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
What Outlaw is known for is giving a new twist to western fashion and invigorating those who wear it or carry it, with confidence. When you see an outfit or a bag from outlaw, you know it’s something you have never seen before, or maybe you have seen it, but never like that.
I am most proud of the community that Outlaw has become, from the customers to artists and those we collaborate with, it’s a beautiful thing to see people embody the mentality, lifestyle and take it with them everywhere they go.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
People today know me as “Outlaw” the fashion designer. Many people don’t know that for the first 20 years of my life, I was a dedicated basketball player. Basketball was and still is and will always be my first love. Still to this day, I am a basketball player at heart; and the mentality I had while playing, is the same mentality I bring with me to my designs
