Life & Work with Veronica Wylie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Veronica Wylie.

Veronica Wylie

Veronica, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have been acting in local and regional theatre since I was eight. I’ve never wanted to do anything else. Once I graduated, I moved to LA to pursue an acting career. It took me a long time to get my foot in the door, but everything changed (incrementally) when I was cast in my first SAG leading role back in 2015. (The film is called The Conway Curve and is available on Prime if any of your readers are interested.) Since then, I’ve done numerous independent films and guest stars on TV shows, including SWAT and The Offer. I’ve also written roles for myself in web series and features – in fact, I’m currently in pre-production, finding funding, for a sex-positive romantic comedy I wrote about a sex therapist who’s a virgin called Good Vibrations. We’re looking for a female director and female-centric crew because my producing partner and I are committed to expanding opportunities for women and nonbinary people in film.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No. I don’t think the road is smooth for any creative career if you don’t already have roots in it. Moving across the country was difficult enough. But pursuing an acting career is a full-time job in and of itself, and if you don’t get a paid gig for a while, then that means you need another full-time job on top of that. Add in the expense of classes and marketing – headshots, postcards, a website – the road is very long and windy and full of potholes. But I can’t imagine doing anything else.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I think what sets me apart from a lot of other actors is that I am also a writer. I don’t want to wait for a role to come to me, so I write stories featuring the kinds of roles I want to play. For instance, in the romantic comedy I’m trying to find funding for, I play the wild child’s best friend who can’t seem to get her life together. I really enjoy roles that have a hidden layer that requires me to delve really deeply into the psychology of my character. I also really enjoy doing stunts.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory is probably when we got our family dog. I already knew her because her mother belonged to my best friend. So, when they dropped her off, I crouched down and opened my arms wide for her to run into them – and she blew right past me into the house where my mother was standing.
