Today we’d like to introduce you to Viv Nguyen.
Hi Viv, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My love for content creation began in my junior year of high school when I discovered YouTubers like Jenn Im and Karen Yeung and started getting into fashion. As someone who was raised in a traditional Asian family, it was hard for me to express myself. Social media became my creative outlet where I was able to be myself without judgment from anyone I knew. When I wasn’t studying, I was editing, filming, and creating fashion content. Being on platforms like YouTube and Instagram gave me community, self-confidence, and even some of my closest friends. When I think about how far I’ve come, I attribute a lot of that success to the people I’ve met, opportunities I’ve received, and experiences I’ve had from social media. It’s truly shaped me into the person I am today, and I hope that by sharing what I do and love, I can encourage others to come out of their shell as well. My goal isn’t to leave behind a legacy but rather to help others in any way I can — whether that’s by sharing an amazing new restaurant, finding the perfect pair of pants for girls with a similar height/body type, or just being vulnerable about everyday struggles.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
While social media has been a mostly positive experience, I’ve definitely encountered some obstacles. As a student, I prioritized my academics, and rightfully so. However, it didn’t leave me much time to create or edit content; I always ended up going on a hiatus during the school year. There were even instances where I may have excelled, but school and life got in the way. Perhaps my biggest regret is not taking those opportunities or risks. Furthermore, I often felt this pressure to constantly be creating/producing and couldn’t help but compare myself to others. As someone who aspires to be a full-time content creator, I had high expectations for myself. When I couldn’t live up to them, I became disappointed and discouraged. This is, unfortunately, one of the downsides to social media, so it’s only natural I still feel this way. However, I’ve learned how to manage my time better and not beat myself up over it. I remind myself that any progress is still progress.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I work as a UI/UX Designer and E-commerce Coordinator full-time. As a UI/UX designer, I update the company’s website and navigation, making sure it’s optimized for the user experience. As an E-commerce Coordinator, I help manage the e-commerce platform on a daily basis — overseeing products, collection launches, sales, Shopify apps, website merchandising, and studio photoshoots. Working in the retail industry, I want to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to own a brand. Eventually, I hope to do content creation full-time.
