We’re looking forward to introducing you to Mariah Hutton. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Mariah, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of my day are all about easing into motion and setting the tone for how I want the day to feel. I usually start by lying in bed for a bit, catching up on messages and checking my schedule for lessons, client updates, and anything that needs my attention. Once I’m up, I make coffee, spend a little time outside with my dogs, and tidy up the kitchen — it’s my way of getting my body moving and my mind organized. From there, I head out to my pool to check the water temperature, make sure the space looks inviting, and get everything ready for the first lesson of the day. Those simple routines help me feel grounded, calm, and ready to take on whatever comes next.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! I’m Mariah, the owner of Simpli Swim LLC — a small, heart-driven swim instruction business based in San Diego. I teach lessons from my backyard swim spa and work with an amazing instructor who travels to clients’ private pools across the area. What makes Simpli Swim special is the personal connection we create with every swimmer — lessons are calm, encouraging, and tailored to each individual. I started this business because I saw how much confidence and peace the water can bring when it’s taught in the right environment. Over the years, it’s grown into something that feels deeply personal — a space where families feel safe, seen, and supported. Lately, I’ve been working on streamlining the behind-the-scenes side of things — from simplifying scheduling and billing to improving how clients experience the business overall. I’m also developing a new, more focused lesson style designed to help swimmers progress faster while still keeping that same supportive and gentle approach that defines what Simpli Swim stands for.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
The part of me that thought success had to come from constantly pushing, doing, and saying yes to everything has served its purpose. That drive got me here, but now I’m learning that sustainability and peace are just as important as growth. I’m shifting toward working smarter, creating systems that support me, and allowing myself to rest without guilt.
When did you last change your mind about something important?
The last time I changed my mind about something important was when I realized that slowing down to build a strong foundation for my life mattered more than constantly pushing toward the next goal. Over the past year, becoming a wife, buying our first home, and settling into this new chapter has shifted everything for me. My husband and I have become really intentional about how we make decisions — tuning out outside opinions and focusing on what feels right for us. It’s changed how I see the future, especially as we prepare to start our family. I’ve learned that creating a peaceful, grounded home and a strong marriage is just as important as any milestone. It’s about building the kind of life we want to bring our children into, not just checking off what comes next.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would probably say that what really matters to me is living a life that feels intentional — where the things I pour my energy into truly mean something. I care deeply about creating a sense of peace and purpose in everything I do, whether that’s in my marriage, my home, or my work. They’d say I’m someone who values connection, growth, and showing up fully for the people I love — but also someone who’s learned the importance of boundaries and protecting my own energy. I want the spaces around me, and the people in them, to feel grounded, cared for, and inspired.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
Something I understand deeply — that I think many people overlook — is how much children’s behavior comes from emotion, not defiance. Kids don’t just need direction; they need connection, especially on their hard days. When they’re tired, overwhelmed, or struggling to regulate their emotions, what they need most isn’t correction — it’s calm guidance, patience, and a sense of safety. I’ve learned that when a child feels understood and supported, even in their hardest moments, their confidence grows and their ability to learn follows naturally. It’s not about demanding perfection; it’s about helping them feel capable, secure, and proud of themselves no matter where they are that day.
