Martin Huerta & Alejandra Tejada of Mexicali, baja, mx on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Martin Huerta & Alejandra Tejada shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Martin & Alejandra , really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
I think one of the problems we architects face is that people don’t really know what an architect’s job is and how we can help them create spaces with emotions, that evoke different atmospheres, and where each activity can be carried out in the best possible way.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
We are an architectural design studio, develop house and commercial projects, we love hearing people talk about their lives, their hobbies, the music they listen to, the books they read, whether they like animals. The more information we have, the easier it is to develop a strategy for them, which guarantees greater satisfaction for our customers.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
My dad, who is also an architect, and my mom, who is a teacher, are excellent professionals, but they are even better people. They taught me how to be a human being, how to relate to others, and how to enjoy life.

When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
I have always been very stubborn, which has helped me and determined many important moments in my life. It is like a powerful force that pushes against doubts or fear.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I am convinced that we can live better in cities. We have to commit ourselves as individuals within society and improve living conditions for everyone. We have to evolve the way we live in society. I dream of people working to improve their streets and sidewalks, planting trees to create better environments that help us improve our quality of life.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I was born to live, and when we create, we live. So I try to live creatively in different situations, to create strategies to solve problems. Creativity is a revolutionary activity; it helps us empathize and connect with others.
