Matthew McLaughlin on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Matthew McLaughlin. Check out our conversation below.

Matthew, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
I wake up every day, anywhere between 3-4am and the first thing I do is make a cup of pour over coffee. I then spend the next 2-3 hours writing and editing non-stop without any distractions. By around 6-7am, I go to the gym or for a run. Upon returning home from exercising is when my workday begins, as the calls and emails start pouring in. From there, the day can go in just about any direction, but my morning routine has stayed the same for the last few years.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am the executive producer of The Cold Red Podcast, a true crime series hosted by former FBI agents Raymond Carr and James R. Fitzgerald. They analyze unsolved or complex cases, exploring the investigative and profiling aspects from their extensive careers to provide a unique, expert perspective on the dark side of human nature and the justice system.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memory of feeling powerful was probably when I was a child being bullied by a group of older neighborhood teenagers who had me cornered in a dirt alley. I picked up an old hockey stick I found lying on the ground and started swinging it until they ran away.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would say stop overthinking everything.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version of me is far more extroverted than the real me.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
Following the recent success of the Cold Red Podcast we received an outpouring of support from our audience for highlighting cold cases, giving a voice to the victims, and discussing topics that most people don’t want to talk about like human trafficking or the backlog in untested rape kits throughout the major US cities. I believe our audience would miss our hosts and guests’ perspective on high profile cases along with our cold case work.
