Meet Aaron De La Cruz of T$uWAVE (Recording Artist) in San Marcos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron De La Cruz.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Aaron. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
To tell you how I got to where I am at today, I would have to take you back about 20 years. When both my mother and my father had decided to better their lives and risk everything to cross over to the United States in their teen years. My mother is from Durango, Mexico and my father is from Jalisco, Mexico. Remembering how they crossed over here for my brothers and I made me soak in all the blessings and opportunities it has presented me. My mother used to tell me stories about my great-grandpa, whom I had never met because he had passed away trying to cross a river to come to America. That alone was a “woah” moment and big eye opener for me, it makes me feel like I have to give it my all for them, I feel that’s where I got my “I gotta get it” mentality from. Fast forward a couple of years later and I am the youngest of three. My oldest brother was probably the biggest influence on me since I used to follow him everywhere haha. The music I listened to, what’d I’d wear, breakdancing, and skateboarding all came from him haha. The first rap album I ever listened to was 50 Cent’s Get Rich or Die Tryin, I remember when I was in elementary school, my brother would always be bumping that joint so loud dropping me off haha good times for sure. My second eldest brother was my rock, he was born with a rare Down syndrome, but that has never stopped us from living life! He’s my biggest motivator for sure, he just finished writing his first book and I’m so stoked for him about it, it’s like an autobiography about his life and challenges that he has faced. If your interested you should tap in I’ll leave some info! My parents divorced at an early age that I don’t remember. I knew it was hard on my brothers but all my life I have been used to a split household, I honestly have a big family haha, I think that’s definitely why I am so heavily influenced, so s/o to my family haha I love y’all. But before I got into Hip-Hop and Rap, I used to listen to Rock n Roll haha crazy, my pops would always bump Guns N‘ Roses when I was younger and I instantly became a fan of Slash. I used to listen to them on the regular, I even grew my hair just to be like him haha. In like 4th grade I had convinced my pops to buy me an electric guitar and amp off of E-bay. It was so bad ass, I would practice every day after school. In 5th grade, I had saved enough to buy myself a bass guitar and one of my childhood friends named John asked me to play bass in his band, we were only together for the summer but it was a good run haha. I had got in trouble in middle school one day and as punishment my pops took my guitars away and told me he sold them, eventually I forgot about them. But I started getting into rap more because of that, I used to listen to a lot of music like Starship Nikki Minaj days, Lil Wayne, J. Cole, Wiz Khalifa Flight School n all that good shii, but I never really experimented with rapping or anything. Not until I got in high school, I would hang out with my older brother and his best friend, he would also have his little bro with him too, s/o trvmvtiq! But yeah we would just smoke be listening to music and out of nowhere they would just start freestyling ha, at first I would only listen but as we hung out more I would also start rapping with them. After that, I would start freestyling to my self and practice before I would hang out with them, so I could be sure I will be saying some fly shii haha, this was all in like 2013.

In 2015 when I became a senior and got my first job I blew my whole first check on my recording setup and it was so worth it, that summer I would lock myself in my room and force my self to learn how to record and mix, of course, I started on GarageBand, but I made the most out of what I had. That summer I had also got close to the homie Cody Scweibold and we worked on music allllll the time, s/o to him because all that time made me take it more serious than I did at the time. It got to the point where he would let me go over to his house and record when he wasn’t even home, I was kicked out for a while and he would let me stay over and that’s all we did. Huge s/o to the Schweibold’s. We went to some music school for a while over at StudioWest, they were super dope, that point was another ‘level up’ for me and helped me focus more on my craft, they provided mixing classes, studio time, and would send us to cool music conventions. I’m thankful I blew my first paycheck on that equipment because I definitely wouldn’t be where I am at today.

Has it been a smooth road?
It most definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Of course, there will be many ups and downs, but I also understand that this life consists of intervals so I try my best to keep my self around positive and successful energy, I am a firm believer that what you put out is what you’ll get back.

Please tell us about your art.
I go by my stage name “T$uWAVE”. Pronounced (Sua•vay) & I am a Recording Artist from San Marcos, California. I like to be referred to as an artist more than a rapper because I am confident in my talents and abilities to be able to adapt to genres or styles while still staying in my lane, music wise. I think because of that duality it has allowed me to work and network with other crowds that might be different from mine. I am most proud of the continuous grind and growth since when I first started, definitely excited to see what 2020 has in store for I and loved ones.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I love about San Marcos is that there is A LOT of talent. Foreal. Not even in just San Marcos but all of San Diego County, so many heavy hitters. I believe San Diego will be the hub of music for the next couple of years just watch! NETWORK.NETWORK.NETWORK.
