Meet Kathy Low of Abacus Properties in Rancho Bernardo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathy Low.

Kathy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Born in Hong Kong, I came to the US for school when I was a young teenager. Being away from my parents, I learned to be independent quickly. It was not always easy. Back then there was no smartphone, no FaceTime. I did not want my parents to worry because they sacrificed so much to send me to America. I would not tell them how lonely I was sometimes or I struggled with my classes. I saw snow for the first time when I went to college in New Jersey. I still remember vividly walking down a snow covered lawn to rush to class, I slipped and snow dumped inside my sneakers. Someone yelled out, “step off to the sidewalk!” I was so embarrassed.

I started my real estate career when my husband and I moved to San Diego in 1997. I thought selling homes was fun and when I became a mom, being a Realtor worked out great because of the flexibility that allowed me to be the full time mom to my son.

I founded Abacus in 2006. In the face of the historic global financial crisis, when real estate companies everywhere were going under, I saw the opportunity for a local, service and value focused company. Riding the wave of a real estate technology explosion, we replaced flashy office buildings with ever-improving technology; we did away with four walls and embraced mobility and flexibility. By the grace of God, with consistent hard work, always striving for high ethical standards, we survived the downturn and was well positioned to reap opportunities in the recovery.

I credit our success to my agents. I am blessed with many agents who have been with me almost from day one. I value their loyalty and trust. I enjoy supporting and mentoring my agents. I love helping others and problem solving. Sometimes I feel like “mom” to my team. My most satisfying moments as a broker have to be when our brand new agents close their first deals!

Tell us about your work.
Recruiting was difficult in the beginning. As an immigrant Chinese woman, I was a far cry from the typical corporate real estate broker. The surprised looks from agents I interviewed confirmed the barrier was painfully real. Juggling between work and my son was exhausting. Being your typical Asian “tiger mom”, I was constantly driving my son to and fro Chinese class, piano and violin lessons, music competitions, orchestra rehearsals, after school tutoring, and on and on. Mobile technology saved my life.
