Meet Abi Erle of Smile It Forward in Carmel Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abi Erle.

Abi, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started this because growing up, cancer has been a big part of my life. Around me, many of my family/friends have been affected by cancer, as well as my family has always been great supporters of cancer organizations. So, I wanted to do something to help this cause. I started Smile It Forward through a social entrepreneur and leadership program for teens called WIT or Whatever It Takes. This program encouraged me to do this and I couldn’t have done it without them. I started by making tote bags and pins, then promoting them on social media and creating a website. Then, as people bought them and I raised enough money, I bought the materials and made a bunch of packages for the kids. Recently, I delivered 22 packages to kids going through chemo.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Some struggles have been getting people to buy some of my products/ supporting my organization in donating. In the beginning, I couldn’t get many people to buy pins and bags but when I made the website, it was much more sufficient. Also, getting my organization started was very difficult and slow, but once it started coming along, it was so worth it.

We’d love to hear more about your organization.
Smile it forward is a non-profit organization that brings care-packages to kids going through chemotherapy. The goal is to put a smile On as many kids faces as we can. Also, the reason I decided to do packages is that many kids get bored during the long hours of chemo as well as just deserve a smile. So, each package is filled with toys and crafts. What I am most proud of is that I am making a difference in these kids lives, no matter how small. Knowing, I make I kid smile, going through this much pain in their lives, makes me so happy!

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always companionate and empathetic. I always empathize with everyone and wanted to make sure they were ok. I was also a very curious and adventurous child. I loved to climb things and discover new things.
