Today we’d like to introduce you to Alan Kinzel.
Alan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I came to San Diego on a family vacation. One of our favorite things to do was to camp at Campland on the Bay. We were having a nice family talk while playing games when my oldest son started telling me about how badly he was being bullied at school. How he felt so isolated and sad. He said “Nobody cares about me because I am not good at baseball or football”. As a dad, my heart was heavy and I wanted to do something to change his trajectory. So I talked with my wife and decided that a change of scenery was the best thing for the entire family. I wanted to find the absolute best place in the world to raise my kids going forward. I didn’t have to look far. I looked at Coronado, which reminded me of Mayberry. Low crime, families out riding bikes together, the Mayor was a high school teacher at the local school. The kids could learn to sail, surf and have some independence as they have a lot of opportunity at their disposal. So, I made this my goal and told the family that they were going back home without me. I left my career as a mortgage lender and entrepreneur to start a real estate investment company in San Diego. I lived in the camper trailer for about a year while I got my business up and going in California.
Initially, I had a contractor’s license and was investing in properties during the housing crisis but it got very difficult when the hedge funds came in force to San Diego. They were buying everything possible. Other Realtors and real estate agents knew we were cash buyers. They would come to us and say, “I have a probate deal, make us an offer!” Which really made me mad. They knew I had to buy a home at a 15% discount or greater to fixed up value. They were not looking out for the best interest of their clients.
This made me so mad, I wanted to do something about it. I wanted to become a real estate broker and specialize in helping the people who need it most. Families going through probate, trusts and separation. I have relationships with people throughout San Diego that know to call me when experience and compassion matter in getting their clients, friends or family the top dollar for their homes. I bring my MBA and negotiating skills, mortgage background, construction experience, certifications and experience from being a top 2% Realtor nationwide in serving my clients.
Has it been a smooth road?
Not at all. California is very expensive. To leave my job, relocate to California, switch industries and move my family out here was a big challenge. But well worth it!
We’d love to hear more about your business.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
The market is very strong right now. Certain areas are hotter than others. Affordability will always be a challenge in San Diego, but our area is highly desirable. Demand will always be there, but technology and entrenched competition always make it tough to start up a new real estate career.
