Meet Alegra Loewenstein

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alegra Loewenstein.

Alegra, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always felt that I was a jack of all trades, but master of none. At least, I used to feel that way, and I had for a long time. I remember talking about that with a friend in high school. I won’t bore you with all the details of my life between now and then, but I’ll give you the highlights of how that feeling has shaped who I am.

Because interestingly enough, I’ve continuously found ways to excel because of my wide ranging skills and adaptability.

In high school, I discovered theatre. And in theatre (spell that with r-e, by the way, not e-r, that was always the rule for us), the show must go on, and you might find yourself making a pair of shoes out of felt when someone forgot part of their costume just as much as you might be running wires for sounds and lights.

Throughout my higher education, I volunteered and worked in science and environmental education, while I studied ecology and conservation biology (B. S.) and creative writing and poetry (M. F. A.). When I started my career, I worked in science and environmental education (at nonprofits and universities, not traditional classrooms). Once again, I found myself in a field in which “the class must go on” and I had to be creative and think on my toes. I also combined my background in science and writing while creating curriculum and the like.

From there, I leapfrogged to health coaching, which was an easy transition, and in this work, I started writing books, which led me to where I am now, author and writer. I write my own books on health, wellness, mindfulness, and earth-based spirituality, as well as scribing books for other personal development professionals, including everything from organizing to inspirational speaking to business coaching and more. My scientific brain combines with my creative brain and it finally feels like I’ve combined all the trades in which I was a jack and created my own particular niche in which I am a master. It feels so great!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?[laughing]
No. It has not been smooth. It’s been full of both professional and personal ups and downs.

Working for yourself has been hard for me because I really like to be appreciated. I love being part of a team and knowing that I’ve done a job well. Sometimes on your own you’re in an echo chamber, and one thought of self-doubt can grow louder.

I love health coaching and still have a small number of clients, but pursuing that exclusively was hard because of the nature of the work – there is usually no definitive endpoint for the progress, so even when my clients love our work, they end our work with more of their own to do – personal development is always ongoing.

Books, however, have a clear endpoint, at which one can celebrate, be appreciated, and feel confident in the completion of the project. This suits me much better and I absolutely love writing books for my clients, as well as my own books.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am an author and a writer. As an author, I write my own books, and I focus on health and wellness and how green spirituality and mindfulness can foster health and happiness.

As a writer, I like to say I “scribe” books for other people. The more common term is ghostwriting, but I really don’t consider myself the author – It’s more like I channel the ideas of my clients and just put it in book format. I focus on sharing wisdom in a format that is impactful and easy to digest. I actually call my specialty the “Wisdom Memoir” – because it’s a little bit of personal story, a little bit of wisdom, and a lot of impactful guidance. I love working with coaches, speakers, and business owners to share their wisdom in this impactful way.

I love creating guided journals because I know how impactful a journaling practice is for myself and my clients, and when you use a journal as a means to delve into a topic where you want to make progress, it really works!

My collected experience – from my bachelor’s degree in ecology and conservation biology to my master’s degree in creative writing to my health coaching certification plus my obsession with reading self-help and personal development books – all combine to allow me to literally see a book in someone. Inside my brain, I get a visual thought that is kind of like a bunch of folders and binders that show me what my client’s book looks like. These thoughts also have a physical element – it’s like a sparkly feeling when I know some idea will fit into the book just perfectly!

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Oh my gosh. I have so many people who influence and support me. The books I read are probably one of my biggest sources of information and inspiration. I love that in reading a book you can get the advice of an expert for under $20. It’s so amazing to me.

I have a book publication coach who has been so helpful in the success of my books. I also have an amazing graphic designer. I have had a business coach who has helped get so much clarity and long term vision. And I have amazing friends who support me by reading my books.
