Meet Alejandra Phelts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alejandra Phelts.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Alejandra. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born and raised in Mexicali, a desert city in Baja California, where the weather is extreme, Sundowns are beautiful and where the light is privileged. I was raised by my parents as the youngest of five sisters. My mother, who was a sewing artist, taught me how to love and appreciate the art, she also taught me how to cherish everything that was handmade and to worry about perfection. My father, a wild booklover, shared with me his knowledge and passion for art history and traveling.

-Experience that changed my vision:
When I was eighteen I traveled to France to study Philosophy, and there was where my vision of the world changed completely. I took Art History classes, I’d visit museums, galleries, artistic shows regularly. My taste and knowledge for art was fascinating and exciting, it’s funny how I used to think that artists were only people that had supernatural gifts, I never thought that I would become one.

When I returned to Mexico I decided to study Artistic Education for Children, and become an Art teacher, during that period I got married and moved to Tijuana, A year after my wedding (2002) I went to a museum where I ran into an artist, we talked for hours and that’s when I realized that art was the path to take and become an artist.

I’m studying Fine Arts for 5 years at the Autonomous University of Baja California and at the same time started my professional work exposing in Galleries and Museums. It’s been fifteen years and I until this day it never ceases to amaze me all the places and wonderful people that I have met on this trip, I will soon be exhibiting at the Bienal of Asia Bangladesh, Peru ICAA Festival, Quinjiang Museum in China and at the Salon de Paris at the Carrousel of the Louvre Museum This just starts!!!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For me the biggest challenge and what makes me more enthusiastic is been a wife, mother and artist, they are two transcendental companies that require a lot of love, congruence and care. My husband and my children are a fundamental part of my success, my inspiration and the engine that encourages me

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Alejandra PHELTS – what should we know?
I am a Visual Artist, my specialty is Painting but I also do photography and installation work, I like to get involved in video and performance projects.

I think my technical preparation has been very important, and my belief that art is transcendent, we are in a historical moment in which it seems that anyone can do art, where the identity and individuality of the artist is attacked and I think that at this point I have remained strong and firm, my art is mine, is like me, seeks truth and beauty.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Perseverance, always remember me look for hope.

I am privileged to be born and live in Baja, the landscapes, desert and the coast are fantastic, the artistic and cultural movement is emerging sharply, I live in Playas de Tijuana, in my studio I have an incredible light and sunsets, I usually do my photography and painting with natural light and I think this brings luminosity and color to my work.

As long as I produce an honest, free art, without caring what the art market demands, someone will value it and I will be happy to have produced it My husband and my children are a fundamental part of my success, my inspiration and the engine that encourages me
