Meet Alex Rendon Alzate

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Rendon Alzate.

Hi Alex, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My full name is Maria Alejandra Rendon Alzate, but I prefer to go by Alex Rendon Alzate. After switching college majors about four times, I decided to take a shot at real estate and earned my license. To continue to support myself while I promoted myself as an agent, I took a job position as the admin for G.J. Gardner Homes in Oceanside, CA. I discovered that I love building dream homes! However, as I was progressing through my career, I also discovered that my lupus was no longer in remission in late November 2021. Lupus is an autoimmune disorder that causes organ failure, and I was once again at stage 4 kidney disease for the second time in my life. At this point in my life, I am a realtor, helping build homes and completing three real estate degrees. Battling my lupus was not on my agenda and I had to make extreme adjustments to keep progressing in my career and education.

To prevent my disorder from being a burden, I tried to make the adjustments affect me personally more than my own life and others. I had a very painful kidney biopsy done the week of Christmas and did my final exams that night. I asked for extension on any deadlines that I could, and I took the opportunity to recover from my surgery during my Christmas vacation. Going back to work and school was a different story. I was weak due to fighting to survive. I had to deal with new classes, three homes in the permitting process, two homes being constructed, and a new health regimen. As I seen myself losing life, it gave me new will and new power. I want to live, so I worked twice as hard to show my body it is not time to give up. There’s too much to do to give up. I went to the gym, followed the kidney diet by cooking vegan food, continued to work through doctor appointments and zoom calls. I also continued to do school online on the weekends. I was doing the work that most healthy individuals do not do on a daily and it worked. My kidney function improved, my movability improved, and I proved to myself that I can do the unbelievable. I am still fighting my lupus and I am winning my fight. As an adult, we don’t get to take sick days. Every day is filled with adulting. I pull through it with dark humor, family & friends, faith, and positivity. There’s always good in the bad!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I went through chemo in high school and almost lost my battle to lupus three times as a teen. It made me believe I had a bigger purpose in life than I was aware of so it encouraged me to accomplish my goals to find that purpose.

I was paying out of pocket for most of my education which made me study harder to pass my courses.

Covid and an autoimmune disorder are not good combinations. I stayed inside my house the first three months of the pandemic. I made major adjustments to not have a lot of human contact and I’m glad it has helped me avoid catching covid so far.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a new bilingual realtor and I will finish three real estate degrees this year (real estate escrow, real estate appraisal, and real estate broker). While trying to build a reputation as Coldwell Banker agent, I started to help build homes. As the admin at G.J. Gardner Homes, I have learned many new things about land, building, zoning laws, building codes, permits, and a lot more. I would say I am the ideal agent for anyone interested in buying land and wanting to build. All in one agent! My clients can also buy a home with me and build an ADU on their property. There’s comfort in dealing with the same person in different areas of real estate.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My parents would never miss an award show. It encouraged me to win more awards and to keep doing a good job in school.
