Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Triener
Hi Alex, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I immigrated from Ukraine to Israel in 1990 and then to the US in 2001.
From 2001 to 2010, I worked for Illumina, the world’s leading genetic sequencing company. I joined it when the team was 150-strong in a single location. Today, Illumina has thousands of employees all over the world.
In 2010, I started a weekend MBA program at the Rady School of Management, UCSD, focusing on entrepreneurship. As our homework in Lab2market class, we were supposed to pitch our startup ideas to our classmates. This is how I invented Tailio, a Smart Litter Box Monitor System for monitoring cat health. I ended up founding a startup called Pet Wireless and selling it to Nestle Purina in 2018. Here is my baby in their capable hands today:

During my prior career and years at Illumina and Pet Wireless, I learned a lot about product development and contract manufacturing. We manufactured Tailio in San Diego, Shenzhen, China, and eventually moved it to the Foxconn factory in Tijuana, just south of the international border.
I love our local entrepreneurial community, and I have participated in quite a few networking and startup pitch events over the years. My fellow founders knew that I manufactured my product with Foxconn, and after selling Pet Wireless, they often asked me to connect them with the factory. I did it to help my community, sort of to pay it forward.
In 2023, Foxconn offered me an independent sales rep contract, which I gladly signed, although I see myself as more of a customer advocate.
I started very enthusiastically, it was fun because I felt like I was helping the customers, the factory, and my family. It’s a true win-win all around.
The Foxconn factory in TJ doesn’t work with startups and doesn’t offer product development services, so I had to turn down potential customers. To serve my customers better, I researched and found contract manufacturers that do work with startups and also outsourced product development companies. That’s how Make Offshore https://makeoffshore.com was born.
Today, I represent over a dozen product development and contract manufacturing companies in the US, Latin America, Europe, and Asia.
Also, I’m building a referral network. I offer a generous finder’s fee to anyone who connects me with potential customers: any companies that develop medical devices, electronics, or pharmaceuticals.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As I described, Foxconn didn’t serve startups and didn’t offer product development services.
Also, researching and selecting contract manufacturers and product development firms is a challenge.
Convincing them to sign a representation agreement with my firm is not easy either.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
