Meet Alexander Vasquez of ConOjosDos in City Heights

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexander Vasquez.

Alexander, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I guess you can say my relationship with photography started with a very typical introduction. I was young, awkward and quiet, but observant and inquisitive. Before finding the passion myself, I remember friends taking an interest in it, but it didn’t spark any fervor until the age of 17 when a close acquaintance introduced me to a film called, ‘A Clockwork Orange’. This masterwork by Stanley Kubrick was the rabbit-hole to a continuing obsession with storytelling through images. My focus was forced into figuring out the puzzle of creating this dream. I wanted to be a storyteller, my lens as my tool. With the help of my best friend (a screenwriter), we would go about attempting to fulfill that. At the age of 18, my parents bought me my first Nikon, and I was off. I brought it everywhere. I photographed everything. I knew nothing at first, and although I was naive and inexperienced, I was hungry. Starving to capture something that made me feel the way I felt when I watched a great film. It wasn’t long before my interests shifted to art photography, realizing I needed that strong foundation for cinema. With obsession, consistent shooting. In time, my work began to slowly evolve and shape into the type of work I only dreamt of creating when I first picked up a Nikon.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Particularly, the biggest struggle was the passing of my mom. On summer midnight in July, my dad called to inform me my mother had been struck and killed by a drunk driver while crossing the street. I was desolate. I felt the lights turn off in my life for several months, and when I finally felt ready to pick up the pieces, I found that my camera was something I had there for me when I needed to express myself. Although I feel the weight of her passing, I know my mom loved me enough to want to see me through to success in what I love. Other struggles I’ve had along the way would generally consist of any hurdles life likes to throw, i.e, flaky clients, bad traffic, the occasional rainy day. It’s important to me not to let small struggles like these bother me, things can usually be a lot worse I’ve found.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with ConOjosDos– tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My company offers photography services specializing in art, fashion, products, and portraits. Our goal is to create something the client feels is personal, thought-out, and refined, at a reasonable price. In my opinion, much of the work being made out there is simply way too expensive for the quality being received. I’d like to provide a less expensive option. The thing that makes us the proudest is watching a smile grow on the face of a client when scrolling through their RAW images.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Our plans for the future consist of expanding interest in art photography in San Diego, as well as attempting to shift the landscape from an Instagramcentric style to something a little more unique. I’d love to meet with other photographers who feel similar, and who’d love to really amplify the quality of photography being created in this city.
