Meet Alfonso Vargas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alfonso Vargas.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I became curious about music when I saw my second-grade teacher play the upright piano in her classroom (which I had thought was just a shelf before she played it) after that every major event in my life revolved around music. From making friendships by creating mixtapes for each other to working and traveling with the Vans Warped Tour for the last four years of its cross country existence. My parents are both immigrants from Mexico making me first generation American. Coming here to chase the “American Dream” takes a lot of risks and Sacrifices but to me what stood out the most is how they had to be creative to get to that dream. I took that trait to heart in my own way. I started finding unique ways to always be involved with music. I started volunteering on the Vans Warped Tour in the catering department with my band on our own dime across the country. From there the network of people we met was endless. This is just a quick spark note version that doesn’t really highlight the crazy aspects of being a musician but you get the point.

Please tell us about your art.
I primarily make music but I also do all of our Graphics for my projects whether it’s painting or illustrating. I don’t really feel like I have a message to portray to others. I think I make my art for my own sanity’s sake. It definitely helps release anxiety, anger, frustration or even promotes self-happiness and hope. The only thing I hope people know about my artwork is that it’s 100% up for interpretation and it’s as honest as I’ll get.

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
Fuck money. The sooner you let go of the concept that you’ll make money doing what you love, the happier you’ll be.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My band Website is lighterburns.com and we are on all major music platforms. You can support by purchasing anything from us, that’s the only way we make money.
