Meet Alicia Becerra

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Becerra.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. When I was 8 years old, I started baking and painting with my mother, who was an artist. During that time, I developed my skills by creating and baking cakes and other goodies for friends and family. Competitions soon followed and I became an award-winning baker, including a win on Food Network’s Cake Wars in 2017.

Cookie art has been my recent focus. It has given me the ability to showcase my painting skills, my culture, and most importantly, my passion for art.

Please tell us about your art.
About four years ago, I noticed a lack of genuine Mexican cultural representation in the cookie world. I saw many stereotypical designs that were not a true depiction of the beauty and art that represent us. We are more than just maracas and mustaches.

In response, I decided to create handmade cookie art by sculpting and painting traditional Mexican items like pan dulce, talavera pottery, mariachi wear, and pop culture inspired foods, to name a few.

My goal was to promote a sense of pride and cultural awareness through my cookie art.

What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
I believe that artists have more opportunity these days through exposure on social media. For example, platforms like Instagram and Facebook provide a wide audience to showcase an artist’s talent.

On the flip side, I believe that art education has become a non-essential subject in our public schools.  I homeschool my kids and routinely teach them valuable life skills and lessons through art – something that public schools lack the funds and/or willingness to do. As such, I support initiatives to fund art programs in schools in hopes of encouraging future artists.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
The best way to see and support my cookie art is on Instagram and Facebook. I also do occasional pop-up sales via my website.
