Meet Allie Moreno of A Writing Box in Escondido

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allie Moreno.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Allie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m a poet. In most cases, my career path leads to teaching, writing, and/or working a separate “day job” in order to get by. With an MFA in creative writing, I was headed toward that path, as an adjunct instructor at Palomar College. In the middle of the semester, I got a call from HP for a role as a web copywriter. Not really knowing what to expect, I took the role and fully integrate myself into the corporate world of tech, printers, design, and marketing.

I worked as a copywriter on the design team for nearly 4 years. It was a great experience, as I was able to learn a lot and work with some great people. At some point, I realized that I could turn what I was doing into a viable business and get even more creative by working with different clients and on a wider variety of projects. I started A Writing Box as a side hustle until it grew enough to be a full business venture – and in January of this year, I left HP to pursue A Writing Box full time.

Today, I work with a variety of clients – many of whom are startups, tech companies, and other entrepreneurs. I write everything from website copy and brand messaging to blogs and social media. I have even come full circle back to my creative roots as a ghostwriter for entrepreneurs to tell their own stories and share their experiences and expertise as books and memoirs. A Writing Box is also growing as a collective of writers and content creators rather than just a solo endeavor.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’ve definitely had some struggles. Launching my own company required being used to the unknown, understanding that not everything will be predicted or set in stone. I had my own share of struggles working with clients, finding new business, building a strong network, and getting myself organized so that my business is as efficient as it can be. I hit some slumps where I even began to question whether I should have started my own business in the first place. But I kept going.

I realized that every business has its ups and downs and you can’t let that get in the way. People around you might doubt you or not take you seriously, but you have to believe in what you’re doing and focus on your intent. If you are passionate and truly believe that you can make an impact using the service or product you provide, others will see the value in that. It’s a rough road, but it’s worth it once you look back and realize what you’ve accomplished in spite of the deck being stacked against you.

A Writing Box – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
A Writing Box provides content and marketing communications to businesses who need content that resonates with their target audience. We help brands tell their stories.

I am first and foremost a writer and that makes me different than others who might have more of a marketing or business background. Because I am a creative writer, I look at how content feels to the reader. I spend time trying to really understand my clients and helping them tell their story in a way that really connects on an emotional level.

Working with new businesses and companies who are rebranding is the most rewarding because I get to shape how all of their content comes together from developing a unique voice and tone for their brand to implementing that voice and creating a strategy across their website, blog, and social media so that their story is not only pervasive throughout all their content but consistent.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is doing work that positively impacts those I work with. It’s constantly learning and growing from every experience or challenge I encounter. To me, success isn’t always simply setting a goal and reaching it. It’s important to have goals and to strive for them, but if you don’t meet them – you still should be able to get something valuable out of knowing where and how you can get better.

I know I’m successful when a client says I put into words exactly what they were thinking and helped them to better communicate who they are to their clients and audience.
