Today we’d like to introduce you to Aly Vredenburgh.
Aly, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have been working as a professional artist since high school. My primary focus is black and white paintings of couples done in oils and acrylics. I also do commissioned works and abstracts. I have had my work shown at the COAL Gallery in Carlsbad. I started selling my works when people visited my parents’ house and saw my work on their walls and asked me if I would do commissions for them. I am also currently a sociology student at the University of San Diego. I hope to become a social worker and do art therapy in the future.
In addition to visual art, I am a violinist in the duo, “Vanilla,” with Michelle Wang, and teach private violin students. I would also like to do music therapy in the future.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think becoming an artist is ever a smooth road. I have been playing the violin since I was four. I come from a family of musicians. My grandfather makes violins, including the one I currently use. I am very critical of my work, both my visual art and as a musician; I wonder if I am good enough or interesting enough to be featured in this magazine.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Aly Vredenburgh – what should we know?
My business is informal. I have a studio in Carlsbad where I work on the bigger projects. I specialize in custom works. People may request that I create works that include their loved ones. I am proud that I have been able to launch my art studio at such a young age.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
It is important to me that I have a unique style both in music and visual art. I would love for someone to see one of my paintings and know that it is a “Vredenburgh.”
