Thanks for sharing your story with us Amber. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Ocean Beach People’s Organic Food Market, San Diego’s only customer-owned grocery store, has been in business for more than 45 years. Though the Market features an award-winning Deli, our customers have told us that they want the option to purchase fresh pressed juice and smoothies featuring organic ingredients. When a space became available, just two doors down the block from the Market, People’s took the opportunity to purchase the property and open the O.B. Garden Café. The Café features not only fresh juices, a smoothie bar, coffee and teas, but also a full service sit-down menu offering organic vegan and organic vegetarian lunch and dinner options, along with local and regional beers and wine. The Café also features indoor and outdoor seating, with a dog-friendly patio and a second floor for dining al fresco.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The Cafe took a little longer to construct than anticipated, but we are up and running at full speed.

People’s is a 100% vegetarian grocer that is also a food cooperative – a business that is owned by the people who use it. And though we are cooperatively owned, everyone is welcome to shop at People’s and to dine at the Cafe. Our mission has always been to promote personal health and well-being and help people live in ecologically sustainable ways – this ethos is part of the O.B. Garden Cafe as well. By sourcing organic foods and ingredients and by serving vegan and vegetarian food, we reduce the use of fossil fuels, synthetic inputs (i.e. synthetic pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers) and reduce carbon emissions, which in turn helps to reduce the impact of climate change.
