Meet Amber Silva of Surprise, AZ

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Silva.

Hi Amber, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always loved photography, but for the longest time I didn’t really trust myself to go after it. Back when I was growing up, it wasn’t exactly the “big thing” it is now—no one was casually saying, “yeah, I’m a photographer.” Then I had my daughter, got her newborn photos taken, and that little spark reignited. By the time my son came along, I just thought… you know what? I love this. I’m doing this.

So, I started shadowing photographers, bought my first camera, and dove headfirst into YouTube—teaching myself how to shoot in manual (which felt like learning a whole new language, lol). I did so many free sessions—seriously, for the first 6–8 months I don’t think I charged a dime and if I did, it was barley anything. And get this… I edited everything from my phone. (Still can’t believe I survived that era.) I just ate up anything and everything I could find about photography, and I couldn’t get enough.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I’m my own biggest critic, and I compare myself way too often. I go back and forth with my style—because I adore bright and airy, but I also have this deep love for moody vibes.

I have had a ton of challenges. I’ve walked away from weddings feeling like I totally bombed, and from family sessions wanting to cry because things didn’t go the way I pictured them. Sometimes it’s the weather turning on me, sometimes it’s a kid who just isn’t having it, and sometimes it’s a dad who would literally rather be anywhere else than in front of my camera. But honestly, the biggest thing? Me fumbling my settings. And I can’t blame that on anyone but myself. It still happens, because… well, that’s life.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a photographer for all the things—those brand-new lifestyle newborns and fresh 48 hours, to weddings, families, and getting to watch them grow. Somewhere along the way in the last two years, I also fell head over heels for senior sessions (seriously, I just adore them). My approach? I like to have fun and be a little goofy, because the best photos happen when people are comfortable and actually enjoying themselves. My goal is always to make sessions easy—especially for kids and dads (who usually show up with that “are we done yet?” energy). And for moms, I want them to feel relaxed knowing they’re going to walk away with photos they love—because I see how much effort goes into planning outfits, wrangling kids, and choosing me in the first place. So I do my best to just be a friend first and knock that wall down.

Now, what sets me apart? Honestly, that’s a tough one because there are so many photographers I admire and learn from. I’m always seeking advice and sharing advice, and I think that community is really important. If I had to pick something, though, it might be that I’ve always tried to keep my prices fair. Photography is such an art, and it’s so time-consuming behind the scenes, but it’s also a business and, for many, their full income. Still, I remember being the person who wanted amazing photos but also thinking, “okay… how am I going to budget for this?” That stuck with me. So I’ve always tried to keep my pricing in a place that feels fair for both me and the families who trust me. (Cue me doubting myself here, but hey—that’s part of the journey.)

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I’m not a big reader—wish I was, but nope, not me (maybe one day I’ll surprise myself). I’m not really a podcaster either, though lately I’ve been tempted to give it a try, haha. What I do love is music. When I’m editing, you’ll usually find me with a playlist going or binge-watching a good TV series. Honestly, it’s my favorite thing to do during the holiday season—well, aside from being with my family and kiddos, of course while i have to be behind my screen editing.
