Today we’d like to introduce you to AmyK Hutchens.
AmyK, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Teaching is in my DNA. I started off as an elementary school teacher in Chevy Chase, Maryland. I got my grad degree from Johns Hopkins University in Education with an emphasis in brain research – cognitive science. I then moved to Shanghai, China and trained teachers in our international school system. From there I moved to London and was the Director of Education for John Paul Mitchell Systems. I started my own training & speaking company in December 2000 in Atlanta, Georgia.
I moved my offices to San Diego in 2006.
Now I travel the globe speaking and running Think Tanks on the critical thinking behind leadership, sales and innovation. I love what I do!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
O.M.G. Entrepreneurship is hard. Extraordinarily rewarding- but hard. I’ve said the wrong thing, under-negotiated my fees, hired the wrong people, been frustratingly misunderstood, and learned a lot in the process. It’s a journey. Still learning. I know I’m going to make mistakes in the future – the goal is just not to make the same ones! 😉
AmyK International – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
As a speaker and business strategist I am known for my massive amounts of energy, irreverence and incredibly practical & effective tools. We change the script on what it means to hear a conference keynote speaker or participate in a Think Tank. We help companies become better problem solvers, better thinkers, so they can sustain a competitive advantage. Need a more cohesive-aligned management team? Need to break through an industry challenge, need more sales? We make it happen!
My book, The Secrets Leaders Keep, is really resonating because it’s not the typical 10 steps to being a great leader. In fact, what sets it apart is the inverse. We talk about the fears and foibles leaders have- the demons they face at 3am. This unique perspective helps leaders realize they aren’t alone.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Any time I hear an anecdote from someone who participated in a Think Tank or heard me speak. They took action/tried a tool and got an immediate result. It totally jazzes me. Just last week a CEO in Chicago called me and said they closed the largest deal in the history of the company after implementing one of my tools, a lady after hearing me on a panel changed her attitude and finally closed a $5M deal, and a woman tried one of my personal tools last year and shared that her husband served her champagne after their conversation. These wins make my heart sing.
