Today we’d like to introduce you to Ana Moreno.
Ana, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My Ph.D. research focused on developing and optimizing genome engineering tools to enable gene therapy. After reading a paper about humans with a gene mutation that don’t feel any pain, I decided to target the same gene using the tools I had developed as a novel, non-addictive therapy for chronic pain. After my Ph.D., I decided to continue with my work and founded Navega Therapeutics, where we are translating this technology to the clinic, in order to help thousands of patients with chronic pain.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Some of the struggles I am currently facing are what all other biotech startups face, which is raising money. Particularly, gene therapy research and translation is expensive, and due to the high-risk, high-reward of this startup, not all investors are right for the company. It’s an exciting journey, full of ups-and-downs.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Navega Therapeutics story. Tell us more about the business.
At Navega, we have developed a gene therapy to treat chronic pain that is non-addictive, highly specific, and long lasting. What sets us apart from others is our approach to treat chronic pain. Traditional approaches have been to utilize small molecules or antibodies, which either have many side effects or lack potency.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’ve had luck in meeting and working with Navega’s scientists and advisors, who are also passionate about developing a novel technology which can eventually help many patients with chronic pain.
