Meet Andrea Melchor of San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Melchor.

Hi Andrea, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in San Diego as the oldest daughter in a hardworking immigrant family. From a young age, life taught me resilience. I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at 13, and later, I underwent major surgeries for Blount’s Disease — an experience that challenged my confidence and identity during the years most kids want to blend in.

Writing quickly became my refuge. It was the place where I could process pain, faith, and everything in between. But for a long time, I kept that part of me hidden — I chose stability first and pursued a career in social work. Working in my community taught me even more about healing, strength, and the power of sharing our stories.

Eventually, I realized that if I wanted others to embrace their voice, I had to be brave enough to use mine. That’s when I decided to stop waiting and start writing. What started as journal pages turned into my debut bilingual memoir, Pages of My Youth / Páginas de mi Juventud — a book that honors the girl I used to be and the woman I’m becoming.

Today, I’m a bilingual author, community advocate, and speaker — telling stories that spark connection, belonging, and hope. My mission is to let people know that even the darkest chapters can lead to the most powerful transformation.

And this is still just the beginning.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. Managing Type 1 Diabetes since age 13, navigating surgeries for Blount’s Disease, and facing periods of depression all challenged my confidence and identity. I had to learn resilience early — physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Even stepping into authorship required me to overcome fear and self-doubt. But every struggle shaped my purpose and taught me that healing is possible, and our hardest moments often become the most powerful chapters of our story.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a bilingual author and social worker, dedicated to supporting families during some of the hardest moments of their lives. In my role with a private agency, I work closely with parents and children as they navigate reunification after abuse has been identified. I connect them with resources, tools, and ongoing support to help break harmful cycles and build safe, stable homes. It’s challenging work, but it’s also a privilege to witness families heal and grow stronger together.

As an author, I share stories rooted in resilience, identity, and healing — especially for those living with chronic conditions or mental health struggles. My debut memoir, Pages of My Youth / Páginas de mi Juventud, is a bilingual project that honors both my roots and my community, proving that our voices matter in every language.

What I’m most proud of is the impact — whether it’s helping a family reunite safely or inspiring someone to embrace their story. What sets me apart is that I don’t just talk about healing — I live it, I work in it, and I write from it. My personal journey deeply informs my professional purpose: turning pain into transformation and empowering others to do the same.

How do you think about happiness?
Connection makes me happy — whether it’s through a meaningful conversation, a story shared, or a moment where someone feels seen. Helping others find healing and hope reminds me that my own struggles had purpose. Writing also brings me joy because it allows me to turn my experiences into something that can support and inspire others. And of course, time with my loved ones — laughter, community, and those simple everyday moments — keeps me grounded and grateful.

At the end of the day, I’m happiest when I’m growing, giving back, and reminding others that they’re not alone.
