Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea and Reid Moriarty.
Andrea and Reid, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We are a mother and son team. I (Andrea) wrote a book about ways we maximized Reid’s special interest in music to help him reach his potential in spite of his autism. He has recorded 2 CDs – Purple Party and Shine. When he graduated from high school we helped him start a podcast, Talk Time with Reid Moriarty, which now boast more than 75 guests including Andy Grammer, Ralph Rubio, one of the Rockettes, or Murray Monster of Sesame Street.
We present frequently at schools and to groups of people who find the human spirit irresistible. Reid is working on 2 new CDs to be released in spring, one with his band Jungle Poppins. He performs his music at farmers markets and conferences. I am working on a second book titled “Included” that weaves together adventures of making the podcast, progressive programs we’ve encountered around the country, and movie scenes that perpetuate three life practices I think we learn best from friends with disabilities.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s an adventure. Challenges include finding celebrity emails! And learning to edit in Garage Band. And convincing Reid to go new places.
Please tell us about Reid Moriarty, Man with a Mic / Andrea Moriarty, author.
I am most proud that we convince our audiences that everyone has unique strengths and abilities. Reid’s exuberant personality sets him apart from other musicians, podcast hosts, and speakers.
My life experience and resourcefulness set me apart from other authors.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
It’s all great learning and part of the process. I can only think of things we want to do because of what we’ve learned – like more road trips, finding a corporate sponsor for the podcast, empowering Reid to be his own spokesman and writing in community with others – rather than anything I’d go back and do differently. If we had done it differently, we wouldn’t have learned those things.
