Meet Angela Leavitt of Mojo Marketing in Little Italy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Leavitt.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Angela. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
From 2007-2010, I worked as the head of marketing for a fast-growing startup in the B2B telecom industry — hosted VoIP/Unified Communications to be exact. And even though I had a decent budget which allowed me to outsource work to various contractors and agencies, I frequently found myself… well… wanting to pull all my hair out.

Why? This was before “hosted” and “cloud” were the household words they are today. Getting marketing agencies up-to-speed with our offering, target audience, and the message was a HUGE struggle. So in many cases, I ended up re-doing things myself. (Ugh! Weren’t the agencies supposed to be making my life easier, not harder?!)

There were other issues with these agencies as well: missed deadlines, poor communication, sloppy mistakes, and a blatant lack of results. “Enough!” I said to my frazzled self. I began the hunt to find a results-oriented agency with a telecom or IT specialization. I just wanted to skip the months of frustration and get down to work.

Surprise, surprise… I came up empty. There were a few telecom PR firms, but none that provided a comprehensive suite of marketing services. None that could help me — a marketing department of one — do my job better and with ease. So, it finally dawned on me: I can help to fill this void in the industry. I can take everything I’ve learned working with so many agencies and create something different: an un-agency.

An agency unlike any I had ever encountered. An agency that focuses exclusively on the telecom industry and channel, eliminating that frustrating learning curve. One that cares about high-quality work, hits deadlines and communicates well. And most importantly, an agency that prioritizes results over activities.

Since 2010, we’ve served nearly 200 telecom and IT companies of all shapes and sizes. And even though we continue to grow and evolve at a fast pace, we stick to the values that started this whole thing in the first place.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While the last few years have been relatively smooth, there were definitely some rocky years. About a year into the business I brought on a couple of partners, which allowed me to relinquish control of operations and focus on business development. The decision was made to create our operations team overseas, and since I wasn’t super involved in that process, I supported that decision.

After a couple of years, the partnerships dissolved which left me managing the overseas team in addition to my other responsibilities. I quickly realized it wasn’t going to work for me moving forward. Between the language barrier, the time difference, the lack of face time and other nuances and disconnects, I decided to rebuild the team here in San Diego.

At the same time, we lost our largest client with very little notice. It seemed like an insurmountable challenge at the time, and many thought that would be the end of Mojo. But looking back I”m so grateful it all happened as it did. It really caused me to stop, reflect and rebuild the company very intentionally.

Once the changes were in effect and the team began to grow here, we began to experience explosive growth and haven’t looked back since.

Mojo Marketing – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are the first and only full-service marketing agency specialized exclusively in B2B telecom and IT. Having that focus sets us apart from every other agency out there.

There’s a huge learning curve when it comes to the telecom industry – it’s like learning to speak a new language. With Mojo, we already speak the language and can jump right into solving problems for our clients. From a services standpoint, we do anything that falls under the marketing umbrella. Branding, messaging, web design and development, lead generation campaigns, social, email, content…you name it.

We are most proud of our reputation for quality, creativity and responsiveness. Each time I attend industry events, more and more people have heard of us, and they’re hearing really great things.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
It’s hard to pinpoint a single moment, but I experience the most pride when my team members succeed. I’ve discovered how much I love coaching and developing other professionals and creating an environment that encourages life-long learning. I’m so honored I get to work with such a smart, ambitious and fun team, and I’m so honored to watch them grow in their skills and confidence.
