Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelica Ortiz and Martha Mekonen.
Dr. Angelica and Dr. Marty met during orientation of their chiropractic college. They endured all of the struggles of grad school together, which included countless sleepless nights of studying, radiology practicals, board exams and found their passion, pregnancy! In the final trimesters of school, they decided that they were tired of taking direction from professors and could not do it for that much longer. Suddenly Life Adjusted was in it’s beginning stages, the docs spent hours creating their business plan, marketing themselves on social media, and manifesting what their lives would be like after graduation.
Soon enough April 21, 2018, had arrived and it was officially graduation day! The docs saved up all of their graduation money, moved to San Diego and made it happen. With only $4000 they became licensed in the state of California and began renting a room in a prenatal massage center called Rebirth Massage. The docs flourished there, and they began holding bi-monthly workshops for new and pregnant moms called “Movement 4 Mamas.” Within 10 months the docs had outgrown their small, 100sqft room and needed a bigger space. They are now practicing in Mission Valley and get the opportunity to educate, impact, and empower moms in their transition through motherhood.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We would like to consider it more of a cobblestone road. Things have been difficult for many reasons but mostly due to finances. We started our business with only $4000 of capital, and although taking out a business loan was extremely tempting, when we considered all of the student loans that we’ve accumulated, we couldn’t do it. There is also some difficulty in starting a business with your best friend, especially when things are rough. However, we continue to work on communication and help raise each other up and find solutions to our issues rather than pulling each other down and giving up.
We’d love to hear more about your practice.
Life Adjusted Wellness is different than most chiropractic offices for one dominant reason, our focus is women’s health. You can probably guess that the daily passion for that specialty is driven by our all-female team. The docs at Life Adjusted inform and empower women about their bodies and how to better care for it through posture, individualized rehabilitative exercises, and improving overall function with regular chiropractic care, especially in the perinatal stages of life.
Both Dr. Angelica & Dr. Marty are Webster Certified, meaning they utilize a specific chiropractic technique for adjusting women during and after pregnancy. They also have training with the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), they adjust babies days or even hours after delivery on a daily basis, helping mothers smoothly and functionally transition to motherhood is their objective. As a company, we are proud to be given the opportunity to help hundreds of moms feel confident in their powerful, capable bodies.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Dr. Angelica: Playing outside with my neighbors and my little sister, silly games like hopscotch, chase, tag, and “mud fights.”
Dr. Marty: Creating homemade action films with the neighborhood kids and showing the final product to our parents.
