Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelo David Russo.
Angelo David, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Although I doodled as a kid, I only went back to university to learn how to paint and draw at the age of 26. After three years of classes that followed a specific curriculum, I reached a level where our projects were self-directed and open-ended. This is where I began experimenting with materials and varied techniques. In 2012 my signature mixed-media style was born and has been in constant evolution ever since.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been a rocky road. A combination of highs and lows, but one that has been humbling and eye-opening.
The road to becoming a full-time artist is one that requires not only skill and creativity but a great deal of discipline and an entrepreneurship. The lows can be discouraging to most, but our attitude in difficult times, has a great impact on the end result.
Please tell us about your work.
I am a mixed media painter, known specifically for my use of masking tape and layering which makes my works recognizable.
I am influenced by a multitude of styles such as geometric abstraction, surrealism, cubism, and impressionism. My work also contains figurative work and often reflects psychological ideas and theories.
I believe that what sets me apart is the use of multiples voices that are represented by different styles.
My work is based of the Dialogical Self Round Table Theory by Hubert Hermans, and over the course of a lifetime, will explore the different versions of my self. I am proud to have taken the time required to created the skeleton for the work that I will create in this life-long journey.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have implemented discipline from day one. The struggle when you are no longer in a school setting is that the lack of deadlines removes the pressures to create consistently. Imposing that pressure on yourself is not only key to gaining traction in your career, but also for your professional growth.
