Today we’d like to introduce you to Angie Gutierrez.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I have never liked being in front of the camera, it’s always been a struggle to get a photo with my face in it. It’s not necessarily an insecurity, it has just never felt as comfortable as being behind the camera. As a kid I was always a curious observer of light, shadows, and how they move together. My uncle gave me an old camera that belonged to my father from his time in Vietnam. I loved film the instant we met. And a lot of things made sense since then.
Please tell us about your art.
The work I align with the most is Performance Arts based photography. It’s primarily collaborative so I get to work with theatres, actors, dancers, and other creatives. I dedicate most of my craft to the study of movement. Part of my process is allowing the subject to move around in their own natural way. I understand how difficult it can be to feel comfortable in front of the lens so I allow for as much time as needed for the artist to naturally unravel. As for the art, I want people to genuinely create their own story without distraction as they approach the piece in front of them. I strive for a photograph to convey much more than just the visual sense; it should carry the sound of song in a musical, the feeling of feet pounding on a dance floor, or the tension between characters on stage. The photographs should enhance and genuinely convey the art they capture, not interpret it for the viewer.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
I believe a measure of success is how much the art you make genuinely moves you. It’s making art that challenges you to continue to evolve your work, instead of satisfying a trend. I’m still working on that and I hope to get there one day.
