Meet Anita Noone of A Noone Feldenkrais

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anita Noone.

Anita, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After practicing law in San Diego for more than 20 years, I was ready for something completely different. I had heard of the Feldenkrais Method® but didn’t know anything about it. I looked in the phone book and there was a teacher nearby, so I went for an individual session. The session was pleasant and I really had no idea what had happened. I came back for a second session and the teacher gave me an article about the intellectual underpinnings of the Method. I read the article and was hooked.

Some months later, I started the four-year Feldenkrais teacher training, here in San Diego. As soon as I was certified I started teaching.

I work with artists, athletes, people with neurological challenges, chronic pain patients, people with anxiety and depression, and others. My work is endlessly fascinating – watching people learn to improve beyond what they thought was possible leaves you feeling optimistic!

Has it been a smooth road?
The Feldenkrais Method® is about learning to learn. Whenever I face challenges, I know I have an opportunity to form a new habit, through experimentation and learning. Having spent a lot of time as a lawyer, I was conditioned to move quickly, work hard, and power through problems.

Through my work as a Feldenkrais teacher, I continue to learn to start slowly, so that the process is clear, to take breaks when needed, and to be curious.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the A Noone Feldenkrais story. Tell us more about the business.
I teach individual and group lessons to the public all over North San Diego County. Some Feldenkrais teachers only teach teachers and many only offer individual sessions. I’m committed to offering individual sessions, so that people can improve quickly, and group lessons, so that they can learn how to do it themselves.

I don’t specialize. It’s my pleasure to work with all kinds of people. Whether they are suffering from balance issue, or from grief, they can learn to function better.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The simplicity and practicality of the Feldenkrais Method® contribute to its uniqueness. You don’t need equipment or special clothing. Anyone with a nervous system can do the work. It may be that the Method is not well-known in part because of these things.

And yet, people keep discovering the amazing results that are possible. Recently, Jane Brody, a journalist for the New York Times Science Times, syndicated in over 100 publications, wrote a rave review of the Method. She admitted that she had put the Feldenkrais Method® in the category of New Age woo-woo, and that she had been wrong. She experienced one individual session and one group lesson and was extremely impressed by the elimination of pain and feeling of wellbeing.

People want to feel better and can learn to take care of themselves and to improve their own function. As the Baby Boomer generation ages, they will be looking (knowingly or unknowingly) for Feldenkrais. And as the Millennials watch how the medical system provides care, they may also be especially receptive to Feldenkrais.
