Today we’d like to introduce you to Ara Jin.
Hi Ara, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up in South Korea and was drawn to nursing because I wanted to help people feel better during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. That desire became a career spanning more than a decade across medical-surgical care, emergency nursing, and patient education. The most formative chapter was emergency care in New York during the COVID-19 pandemic. It tested me personally and professionally, and it taught me how much I value staying calm, adapting quickly, and connecting with patients when they need reassurance most.
Wanting a larger role in assessment, treatment planning, and long-term patient relationships, I returned to graduate school and completed my Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner and Clinical Nurse Specialist program, graduating valedictorian with a 4.0 GPA. I am now a board-certified nurse practitioner and am continuing my education through a Doctor of Nursing Practice program.
Alongside that path, I found my professional home in aesthetic medicine. Growing up in Korea, skincare and aesthetic treatments were a natural part of self-care, and as a clinician I discovered they were another way to help people feel better. Today I practice as an aesthetic nurse injector, providing neurotoxin, dermal filler, and laser treatments.
My path has crossed countries and specialties, but the purpose has stayed constant: helping people feel better. That is still the heart of what I do.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not entirely smooth, no. Building a nursing career across two countries, and working in a New York emergency room during the height of COVID-19, tested me in ways school never could. But the challenge that shaped me most as a provider came when I entered aesthetic medicine.
I had more than a decade of acute-care nursing experience, and I quickly realized that being an experienced hospital nurse did not automatically prepare me to practice aesthetics safely. I had never been taught the detailed facial anatomy that injectable treatments require, and I had to learn to recognize, prevent, and manage complications unique to aesthetic procedures, including when and how a treatment may need to be reversed. It was a humbling realization, and it completely shaped the kind of provider I wanted to become.
Aesthetic medicine could never be just about learning how to inject. I committed to understanding the anatomy, physiology, products, techniques, and evidence behind every treatment I offer, and the more I learned, the more central safety became to my practice.
That experience defines my philosophy today. Good aesthetic medicine begins with a thorough assessment and an honest conversation about what is appropriate for each patient. Sometimes the safest and best option is less treatment, a different treatment, or no treatment at all, and being willing to say no is part of being a responsible provider.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a board-certified Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner specializing in aesthetic medicine and wellness. I provide injectable treatments, laser and energy-based treatments, and individualized aesthetic care focused on subtle, natural-looking results.
What I am most known for is being honest with my patients. I spend time listening to what they actually see and feel when they look in the mirror, and then we decide together what would realistically help. I never want someone to feel pressured into a treatment, and I am very comfortable saying, “You don’t need that,” when I believe it.
My approach is also detail-oriented. I look at the face as a whole rather than treating one isolated line or feature, considering proportions, movement, skin quality, and anatomy together. My goal is not perfection or changing someone’s appearance; it is small, thoughtful improvements that help someone look refreshed and feel more confident.
What I am most proud of is the trust I build with my patients. Many of them return and refer their friends and family, and that means a lot to me. I want people to feel they have a provider who genuinely knows them, remembers their goals, and makes recommendations based on what is best for them rather than how much treatment I could sell.
As I continue growing as a nurse practitioner, I am especially excited about bringing more wellness and preventive care into my work. I see aesthetics as one part of helping people take care of themselves and feel their best, not something separate from their overall health.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I love most about San Diego is the lifestyle. The year-round sunshine, the ocean, and easy access to the outdoors make everyday life enjoyable, and people here are genuinely friendly. Having grown up in Korea and lived and worked in New York, I have come to love San Diego’s more relaxed pace.
I also enjoy how diverse the city is. There are so many cultures, neighborhoods, and foods to explore, alongside things that feel uniquely San Diego, especially the beaches and the amazing Mexican food.
If I could change one thing, it would be public transportation. I miss how easy it is in Korea or New York to get around without a car, walk to cafés, or hop on a train, and I would love to see the trolley reach more neighborhoods.
Overall, I love the balance here. I can work hard and grow my career while still having the weather and surroundings that make it easy to enjoy life outside of work.
