Meet Archie Thompson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Archie Thompson.

Archie Thompson has parlayed his musical skills, business savvy, and a strong work ethic into a thriving musical enterprise. Archie cut his teeth in the nightclubs and lounges of San Diego and Los Angeles. He began performing regularly on the club circuit while still in high school, and still, today plays six night a week. He is the jazz artist in residence at First Presbyterian Church of San Diego, where he leads the Jazz Vespers Service every Saturday evening.

As a natural progression to being an in-demand entertainer, he began booking live music for venues and private events. His company, Archie Thompson Entertainment, is the exclusive talent coordinator for some of San Diego’s most iconic properties, including The US Grant Hotel, The Grant Grill, The Intercontinental Hotel, and Red O Restaurant.

A prolific songwriter and producer, Archie has a catalog of nearly 400 original master recordings. He gained valuable experience in the Los Angeles studio scene in the early ’80s and has operated his own recording facility for over 25 years. Archie’s original songs can be heard in today’s most popular films and TV series. His original songs and productions have been featured in “How To Get Away With Murder” on ABC, “Timeless” on NBC, “The Resident” on FOX, “Black Lightning” on the CW, “The Chi” on Showtime, “What They Had” starring Hilary Swank, Tyler Perry’s “Boo A Madea Halloween” and in the upcoming “A Madea Family Funeral”—just to name a few. He produced, arranged, and performed the opening theme for the Emmy Award-winning show, “Archer Dreamland”, “Archer Danger Island” and the upcoming “Archer 1999.” A multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Archie plays most of the instruments on his producitons—playing piano, saxophone, bass guitar, drums, guitar, various keyboards, and percussion. He is constantly writing and producing music, adding to his diverse musical catalog.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’ve always had lots of work. Having a good attitude, and conducting yourself in a professional manner is key to staying busy. I created a niche for my live performing, which in turn developed into a music booking business. Getting my songs placed in TV and film would not be possible without my great publisher, Eddie Caldwell. It’s essential to have a professional working on your behalf, constantly pitching material for opportunities.

Archie Thompson Entertainment – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Archie Thompson Entertainment is a three-headed monster! I perform six nights a week (twice on Saturday); book live music for venues and private events; and license original songs, (through my publisher), for TV, film, and advertising.

Songwriting/producing for TV and film, I consider to be a great accomplishment. Living in San Diego, and being a successful songwriter for major shows and films is something I am very proud of. it’s always a thrill to hear my songs on TV or in the theatre!

I’m also very proud of my work at First Presbyterian Church of San Diego. I’ve led the Jazz Vespers service there for nine years. It takes place in the intimacy of the 4th Avenue Chapel on Saturday evenings. Being a Christian, my affiliation with First Pres helps to keep me grounded, and grateful.

Being diverse can set you apart from others. Developing multiple ways to generate revenue, (all music related), so I don’t have to rely solely on gigging to make a living. Being a booking agency is a ton of work! My wife Trish Thompson, handles the operational side of our business. All booking, scheduling, invoicing, paying musicians, taxes, etc. are handled by Trish. She’s sharp as a tack, and I could not do it without her!!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
A paycheck!

I strive to write music that will stand the test of time. Authentic music, with real instruments, that tells a story.
