Meet Ariana Gonzalez of City Ballet of San Diego in Pacific Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ariana Gonzalez.

Ariana, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was trained almost solely by my parents, Steven and Elizabeth Wistrich, the artistic directors of City Ballet. They taught me everything I know about this business, and more than prepared me for my time with the Joffrey and Atlanta Ballet.

Has it been a smooth road?
A life in the arts is never a smooth road! There many, many highs and lows along the way. I think the biggest struggle I have dealt with is self doubt. My level of expectation for myself has always been unforgiving. As I get older I am trying to be more gentle on myself, and not let the small stuff get to me.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with City Ballet of San Diego – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
City Ballet is the premiere ballet company in San Diego. We are fortunate enough to have a very high-level repertoire that all big companies perform. I would say that my specialty is the dramatic story ballets. That is where I feel most at home. I am most proud of the level of talent within the company, and as I mentioned above, the beautiful ballets that we are blessed to dance!

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
It’s hard to pick just one thing I like best about San Diego! Growing up here, I didn’t realize how fortunate I was living in a city that is diverse in culture and has the best weather, hands down! We are a coastal community, but within a matter of hours you can be up in the mountains or out desert!
