Today we’d like to introduce you to Arianne Virsunen.
Hi Arianne, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Happy to share! Both of my parents were entrepreneurs, so I like to say I grew up as an entrepreneur in training. I actually started my first business back in 4th grade — “The Kick Back and Relax Spa”! That entrepreneurial spark has always been there and my mom really encouraged that spirit so I give a lot of credit to her!
I went to SDSU and started my career working both in-house on a marketing team and at a traditional agency. Early on, I saw how most agencies stretch their teams too thin, which takes a toll on creativity — and on people.
That’s really why I started BLOND BRANDS: I wanted to build a boutique agency that could serve a small, curated roster of clients with a high level of creativity, intention, and care. Health and wellness has always been really important to me personally, so it was a natural fit to focus our work in industries like wellness, beauty, hospitality — spaces where we can help brands tell meaningful, elevated stories.
Just as important as the work we do is the culture we’ve built. I’ve been really intentional about creating a work environment where my team — who are predominantly women — are genuinely excited about what they’re working on and feel fulfilled creatively.
So for me, the journey has been about honoring that entrepreneurial spark I grew up with, while building a creative business and culture that reflects my values — one that feels thoughtful, intentional, and truly supportive, both for our clients and our team.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all! Haha. It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but that’s part of building anything meaningful.
One of the biggest challenges has been balancing the creative side with actually running a business — managing clients, finances, operations, and scaling a team — and there’s no real manual for how to do all of that at once.
When you’re scaling, the financial ups and downs can feel extreme. You can have $50K++ sitting in your account one day and $5 the next because you’re investing in your team, marketing, vendors… you really have to develop a bit of a gambler’s mindset — taking risks, trusting your instincts, and figuring things out as you go. A big turning point was getting the support of a really good CFO. Having that financial guidance has given me clarity and confidence around decision-making and has helped me better navigate growth in a way that’s sustainable.
I’ve also gone through plenty of burnout from taking on too much myself. As a founder, it’s so easy to fall into that pattern, especially when you care deeply about the work and it comes from a place of true passion. I’ve really had to learn how to delegate, how to lead, and how to build a team I can trust so that I can stay in my ‘area of genius’.
And throughout all of this, I’ve had to remind myself to prioritize my own health. It’s easy as a business owner to put yourself last but health and wellness have always been important to me personally, and I’ve learned that if I’m not taking care of myself, I can’t take care of the business or lead my team well whatsoever.
All of these lessons have shaped how I run BLOND BRANDS today: thoughtful growth, a focus on quality over quantity, protecting creativity, and making sure we take care of both the work and the people.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At the core, my work is about building brands and telling stories through thoughtful creative. Brand identity design, creative campaigns, and experiential events are truly my art — they’re how I express creativity and help clients bring their vision to life in a way that feels elevated and unexpected across every touchpoint.
I specialize in working with clients in industries I’m passionate about — particularly health, wellness, beauty, and hospitality — and I do a lot of work with female-founded fitness studios, which I love! Over time, that’s evolved into not just building their brands but also curating and hosting very detailed, immersive fitness and wellness events that feel like an extension of their brand experience.
What I’m most proud of is not just the brands we’ve built, but the relationships we’ve created — with our clients and within our team. We’re a predominantly female team working closely with women-led businesses, which makes the work feel even more meaningful!
What sets BLOND BRANDS apart is really the level of detail we focus on. We work closely with each client to ensure every detail — from their visual identity to the way their brand shows up in-person — feels elevated and really unique. I like to say we “color outside the lines” to create marketing that no one has seen before and stands out in the crowd.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I like best about San Diego — and I’ve lived here since 2014 — is the active and health centered lifestyle with still a drop of city life, but also how every neighborhood has its own unique flavor. There’s a lot of personality and diversity across different pockets of the city, and for the most part, there’s this really positive culture of collaboration. People genuinely want to support and elevate each other, and that creates a sense of community that feels special, especially in creative and entrepreneurial circles.
What I like least is that sometimes it can feel like there’s a bit of a ceiling creatively and it can be very casual — it’s not as fast-paced as places like LA or New York, so you have to be intentional about finding opportunities, collaborators, and inspiration. But I actually see that as an opportunity too — to build something meaningful and contribute to shaping the creative community here. Traveling to other countries gives me that dose of inspiration that I need and can bring back to my work.
