Today we’d like to introduce you to Arisa Ortiz.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m a board-certified dermatologist and laser surgeon,. My path into dermatology was deeply personal. When I was 18, I developed chicken pox and was left with facial scars that significantly affected my confidence. The dermatologist who treated me not only improved my skin but changed the trajectory of my life. He remains my mentor today, and that experience is what inspired me to pursue this field.
I later trained at Harvard Medical School under Dr. Rox Anderson, who invented the theory for how lasers interact with the skin. That training shaped my commitment to evidence-based innovation and advancing laser technology responsibly. Today, I lecture internationally on cosmetic dermatology and energy-based devices, previously served as President of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, and serve as the Laser Master for the nationally syndicated show Dr. Pimple Popper.
Beyond my clinical and academic work, I founded Your Previsit, an AI-driven platform designed to improve aesthetic consultations by delivering customized patient education before the appointment. The idea grew directly out of my own practice, where I saw how overwhelming and inefficient consultations had become.
What I’m most proud of is the impact, helping patients regain confidence, advancing the science of laser dermatology, and mentoring physicians around the world. At its core, my work is about combining innovation with compassion to elevate both patient care and the field itself.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a completely smooth road. Building technology, especially in healthcare, requires a level of patience I did not fully appreciate at the beginning. Software updates almost always take longer than expected. What seems simple conceptually often involves layers of development, testing, compliance considerations, and refinement before it can be released responsibly.
I’ve learned that iteration is constant. There is always room to improve the platform and make it more intuitive, more useful, and more aligned with real-world workflows. We are continuously upgrading the technology, refining features, and responding to user feedback.
Another challenge has been mindset. Providers are understandably cautious about new platforms. In medicine, trust is everything. We had to prove that this was not just another tech tool, but something that genuinely improves the consultation without adding burden. That required listening carefully to early adopters, refining the user experience, and demonstrating real value.
I also had to grow personally as a founder. As a physician, I was used to making clinical decisions independently. Building a company requires collaboration across engineers, designers, legal teams, and industry partners. It forced me to develop patience, flexibility, and a longer-term view of progress.
What has made the journey worthwhile is seeing how much better consultations can be when the system works. The challenges have ultimately strengthened the platform and clarified our mission: to improve the experience for both patients and providers in a meaningful and sustainable way.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The idea for Your Previsit didn’t come from a tech brainstorm. It came from my exam room.
As a cosmetic dermatologist, I began to notice that the consultation, which should be the most meaningful part of aesthetic care, had become inefficient and exhausting. I was repeating the same explanations over and over again. Risks, benefits, downtime, alternatives, expectations. Multiple procedures in one visit. I started to feel like a broken record. It was not just inefficient, it was draining. I could feel the early signs of burnout from constantly delivering the same dense education in a compressed time frame.
At the same time, I could see patients becoming overwhelmed. They were trying to absorb complex information while feeling anxious and making high-stakes decisions. They would nod and say they understood, then leave without having any procedures done, and later my staff would receive follow-up questions about topics we had just covered. It was not a problem of intelligence or engagement. It was a problem of timing and structure.
I found myself wishing I could simply press play on a high-quality, procedure-specific video and allow patients to absorb the information at their own pace before they ever walked into my office. But the reality of modern practices is that we are too busy to script, film, edit, and maintain professional educational videos. Even if we had the time, updating them would be another burden.
That frustration sparked the idea.
What if we could shift education upstream and deliver it before the consultation? What if patients could arrive informed so that the in-office visit could focus on clinical decision-making rather than repetitive information transfer?
That was the foundation of Your Previsit.
We created an AI-driven platform that generates customized, procedure-specific patient education videos and delivers them to patients prior to their appointment. The AI generates both the script and the video, allowing practices to scale education without adding production workload. We can even create a digital twin of the physician’s likeness, so it feels personalized and familiar, as if the doctor is speaking directly to their patient.
The logic was simple. Patients retain information better when they can review it in advance and revisit it as needed. Consultations become more productive when both sides share a baseline understanding. Standardized education improves consistency and strengthens expectation alignment. And from a systems perspective, reducing repetitive explanation preserves physician energy and improves practice efficiency.
There were educational materials available, but none that were built specifically for aesthetic workflows, customizable to each practice, and scalable without adding staff burden. What excited me most was not just the technology, but the opportunity to redesign the consultation itself.
Your Previsit was never about replacing the provider. It was about restoring the consultation to what it should be. Thoughtful, focused, and centered on shared decision-making rather than repetitive information delivery.
When I realized that this small shift could improve the experience for both patients and providers, and potentially reduce burnout while improving care, I knew it was worth building.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
One of my favorite childhood memories is going to a place called Café Casino with my family. It was a buffet-style restaurant, and we absolutely loved it. The food felt endless and exciting, but what I remember most is how much we enjoyed simply being together. It was loud, warm, and full of energy, and it felt like a celebration every time we went.
At some point, the cashier convinced me that I could “work” there. I would carefully organize the counter area, straighten things up, and take my role very seriously. At the end, she would give me the five dollars my parents had quietly handed her beforehand. I truly believed I had earned it. It made me feel independent, responsible, and proud of myself.
Looking back, it was such a small thing, but it sparked something in me. That early feeling of ownership and contribution stayed with me. Even now, I think about how powerful it is to feel capable and trusted, even in small ways.
