Meet Arne Vandenhoeck of Marche Funèbre

Today we’d like to introduce you to Arne Vandenhoeck.

Arne, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
10 years have passed since 5 dark music lovers sealed a pact and formed Marche Funèbre, doom metal their game. With 3 full length albums and several small releases under their belt, the Belgian quintet has built a steady reputation of making a unique blend of eclectic doom death metal.

Marche Funèbre is a band that lives for and on the stage, so in their decade of existence 120+ gigs have been done in over 10 countries. We toured with some of the scene’s most prolific bands, think of Primordial, Novembers Doom, Ahab, Saturnus and the likes. All of this culminating in our first North American run of gigs, in March 2018.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Actually, building up a career as a metal band will never be smooth, but we had so much fun and brilliant experiences nothing else could have given us.

Struggles in a band of 5 unique human beings are part of it, in a career of 10 years. But so far so good. We only had to ask a member to resign (due to his mental health) once. We had some arguments about artistic ideas, but few of them, and about promotion and other business aspects as well. But in the end, it all comes down to this: we all want the best for our band. That simple fact always clears the tough moments. And of course, with all the good times, the bad times get covered easily, luckily.

Please tell us about Marche Funèbre.
We are a doom death metal band. So basically, we compose, record, and play our own music. The music we make comes directly from the 5 of us. We always write together, as a band, which I am grateful for.

People know us for our energetic live shows, our eclectic way of merging different styles into our own thing, and because we are a bunch of easy going dudes off stage.

After 10 years, we know what we are capable off, and are proud of our legacy so far, but still hungry as a pack of untamed wolves to unlock more great adventures, write new killer tunes, and basically have a great time while doing so. This philosophy reflects on our music and image as well. We’ re a strong unity at this point.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Having nothing to worry about, just unleash my fantasy upon everything I did, be it playing with toys, or outside with friends, or diving into the world of books (we had no TV, no complaints). So, nothing specific, more of a general feeling of freedom, and unlimited things to do in a way.
