Today we’d like to introduce you to Asha Mody.
Asha, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Born in India, I was exposed at an early age to a rich culture that enveloped my senses. The eclectic mélange of ethnic groups, blending of delicate aromas, and multidimensional diversity of the place was exhilarating.
As a girl in those times, I had a lot of boundaries, limiting beliefs, and fixed mindsets. Imagine, growing up with creative instincts in this pulsing, energetic environment pressured to become an accountant. I added the columns of numbers and found that I could no longer ignore the visceral punch of swirling emotions leading me to design. I got inspired by my elder brother who was working for an advertising agency. Seeing colorful designs and logos inspired me. I started my journey of design by assisting as a teacher in a design institute, teaching softwares. Very soon I opened my small design company with my best friend to design albums for music companies, and churches.
Then, I met the love of my life through an arranged marriage at the age of 26. After we were married, my life changed 180 degrees in a month’s time. I closed my business in India and moved to the USA to be with my husband. I was on an H4 visa, which means I was not allowed to work and had to put my business dreams on hold. I had to rely on my strong faith and power of positivity to get me through.
My husband was very supportive and encouraged me to go to evening college while he took care of our kids. I was able to meet new people and keep up with my software knowledge until I was able to get my work permit – which eventually took 10 years! I studied the Graphic Design program at City college San Diego and joined the AIGA group. I had dreams beyond being a housewife and a mom. I signed a petition for providing employment permits for the H4 spouses and wrote a letter to President Obama in the White house. Sharing the fact that I am wasting my education and abilities in this country, and requested he provides work permits to the spouses who are on an H4 visa which would also help the US economy. I finally got my work permit in 2015.
I started freelancing with companies and private clients, I had an opportunity to start working for the Chosen Foods. My strong intuition told me that this was the right company for me because food + design is my passion. At Chosen Foods I had wonderful opportunities to design packaging and branding material for their products. I started understanding the food industry and labels. Dots started connecting about food and health and how it impacts the quality of our life.
My family has a history of health issues. By 40, I started having health issues as well. This is when I came across a yoga meditation practice which helped me apply a healthier & mindful approach to everything in my life.
Inspired by Sadhguru and Tony Robbins, I started developing my ingredients of mindfulness: being conscious about the planet, plant-based eating, listening to your body, standing up for yourself.
Professionally, I found my mentor, Chris Do, who empowered me to become more confident in my design business. I realized as a designer, I didn’t get a voice in C-level meetings. I realized the HUGE communication gap between top-level executives and the creative team. I started to research how to close those gaps.
With Chris Do’s guidance, educating myself with research, and studying, I achieved my C-level certification from Marty Neumeier as a brand specialist. Prior to this, my designs felt empty and incomplete but now I know how to find the soul of the brand – which is BRAND STRATEGY.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
