Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Shafer.
Ashley, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my LuLaRoe business about two years ago. My background is in marketing and public relations, and at the time I was working at a biotech company in corporate communications. When I first heard about the LuLaRoe brand, I felt like becoming an independent fashion retailer would be a fun, creative side business that might bring in some extra income – a “side hustle.” I imagined myself doing photo shoots with my friends all around San Diego, finally having a legitimate excuse for taking annoying amounts of pictures of ourselves. I really had no idea it would become the job of my dreams! Within 3 months, I left my corporate job and began doing my business full time.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As joyous as it’s been, and as many grateful tears as I’ve cried, it’s not without struggle. I didn’t quite realize how easy it is to over work when you own your own business, or how quickly you can feel like you’ve lost balance. Your brain never stops thinking about your business – your “baby.” I’ve always loved the freedom of making my own hours, but when I realized I was putting in more than 60 hours a week, I made a change. I decided I needed a dedicated day off each week. It felt selfish to take a day off, when I’m already so spoiled to make my own schedule and do something I love, but it was one of the best things I did. On my Wednesdays off I watch lots of TV guilt-free, brunch, nap and read. Bonus: I quickly realized a day off makes me more energized and efficient during the other six days of the week!
Another challenge – and I think most small business owners can relate – is the ever-changing nature of social media.
I don’t have my own website, I sell clothes from my in-home boutique, a pop-up party, or on social media. If it weren’t for Facebook, I don’t think my business would be where it is today, but as the social media landscape continues to evolve, there are new things to learn all the time. Things that at one point in time are effective for reaching customers suddenly are not. You must be adaptable and seek resources to stay on top of the changes.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with LuLaRoe Ashley Rae – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
LuLaRoe is a clothing brand for women, men and children that specializes in comfortable and stylish clothes. I am an Independent Fashion Retailer for LuLaRoe, so I get to carry my own inventory, market my business, and build wonderful relationships with my customers through direct sales. I also have had the opportunity to mentor other retailers in their own LuLaRoe businesses. People usually first hear about LuLaRoe because of our incredibly soft and comfortable leggings – affectionately known as “butter pants.” However, I was hooked after my first look at the Amelia dress – a gorgeous, classic dress with box pleats and POCKETS! I also appreciate that the clothes are fashion-forward, and also tasteful and modest, perfect for dressing up for a fun night out, or donning in the corporate world or wearing to church.
I’m proud for so many reasons to be part of LuLaRoe, but I think what makes me most proud is the company’s fundraiser matching program, which allows me to hold fundraisers for organizations that I hold near and dear to my heart, and LuLaRoe matches a portion of my donation!
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m looking forward to offering even more styles for my customers in the future – things like jeans and shoes!
