Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Twymon.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am 22 years old. My boyfriend and I recently moved from South Carolina to San Diego at the end of July, following me graduating from Coastal Carolina University with my degree in Art Studio. I’ve been an artist since I was very young. I started off just drawing things I would see around my home or things I would see when I go out and then I transitioned into more advanced things such as my favorite cartoon characters, anime, etc. It wasn’t until High School that I decided to take my art seriously. I signed up for art courses so that I could figure out whether this was something I was good at or if it was just a phase. It was not! Jumping forward a few years, I’m in college with the declared major of Art Studio, and I was introduced to painting. I fell in love! I was given the opportunity to tap into things I never thought I would be good at and expanded my knowledge in its history. Deciding to continue my journey as an artist is the best decision I could’ve ever made for myself.
Please tell us about your art.
My two areas of focus in college were Oil Painting and Printmaking. Out of all the things I was introduced to, these two art forms were what stuck to me most. I felt I was truly able to capture my visions through the processes that these mediums entailed on top of just loving how the two looked when finished. Today, I specialize in the painting of the female nude through body language and the psychology of color. I typically won’t paint the female form using naturalistic colors rather. I paint the form using colors that I feel best fit the language of how the model is posed. I use the female form to reject societal norms. I study both the positive and negative side of every color and then associate them with the appropriate image. The undeniable exposure of a nude figure captures a story that you may not be able to capture in a fully clothed model. My paintings are intended to empower others to not be ashamed of creating art such as mine and to also let the person viewing it know that it’s okay to love your body and use it as a platform for protest against today’s societal norms. When I’m not working on these paintings, I dive into other things such as painting flowers, drawing/painting celebrities, cartoon characters, and non-representational art. I believe it’s important to have a wide range of art in your collection outside of your area of focus for instances such as commissions and gallery shows. When it comes to these works, my intentions are to make my viewer smile, or make them laugh, or just simply start a conversation!
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
I believe what makes an artist successful is having the ability to take criticism and use it for something positive rather than something negative. A lot of artists think that when their work is being criticized, it means that person doesn’t like it when in reality if you applied the correction you would find that it was intended to help you and not hurt you. I also believe that perseverance is an important quality to have in order to be successful. Things get really tough sometimes and you just want to give up but, having the ability to push through and see things through the end will leave you feeling pretty great!
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My work is available for viewing on all of my social media as well as my website! My work is currently not in any exhibitions. Feel free to share my work and follow me on all of my media to help support!
