Today we’d like to introduce you to Azhane Peters.
Azhane, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Oh boy 😅 this is so difficult because I just feel like I’m braiding hair simple right but to my clients, it’s more than that. It’s a confident booster ego developer complement catcher everything they’ve been looking for in San Diego. Starting was actually the easiest part, I’ve always known I wanted to do hair since I was little like six, everyone in my family braids my mom my aunts, my grandma so it came natural and I was good even tho I never thought so.
It wasn’t until high school (2013) when I had my first client that wasn’t related to me. That gave me the biggest high, I just knew I had to do it forever. I did hair for my senior project and convinced a lot of my classmates to let me practice on them, shoutout to them. My plan was business school hair school millionaire but Spelman didn’t have business classes so I skipped that part. In 2016, I graduated high school and head to beauty school shoutout to them. I completed 1600 hours and boom got my license, it’s more to that story too but that’s a lot to type lol. I then went to work at two different barbershops and a studio due to COVID, I went back to working from home and traveling. I plan to however go back to a salon and expand my services.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Whew, I’m trying not to get toooooooooo personal lol but long story short LIFE. I’ve been through enough to thank god everyday for where I am. When it comes to dealing with people, it never got too hard because I say what I have to say and that’s it. I can’t please or satisfy everyone and that’s okay but because I do this everyday I’m going to make sure I’m comfortable and happy and if that doesn’t work for you, that’s okay. Most of my challenges came from having young parents and myself once I realized I couldn’t change my parents and I control everything that happens to me now life started getting a whole lot better.
Tell us about your work. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
I’m a licensed cosmetologist but I just be braiding. I’m most proud of my clients they’re the best they keep me booked and busy. I’ve been doing most of them since I was in a shop. Like literally without them, I wouldn’t be doing what I love I wouldn’t have none of the things I got. I set my business apart I’m always thinking of how I can improve what more can I offer my clients I care.
What were you like growing up? Personality wise, interest wise, etc.
If “I’m an artist I’m sensitive about my shit” was a person lol I cry about everything I’m a cancer. I’m the oldest of nine siblings so I’m naturally controlling lol but I don’t think it’s bad I just want the best for everyone and I know what’s best so listen to me hahahahaha. Everyone in my family practically raised me but I spent most of my years with my mom and two sisters. That lady is crazy lol but her OCD is why my parts must be perfect lol. I’ve been working since I was 16, that’s why I’m so appreciative of my clients cause I hate working hahahahaha. I’m only 22 tho. My interest growing up was hair and money because I didn’t have either.
