Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Nhung Nguyen.
Alicia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I always knew that I wanted to be in the beauty industry; it was just an instinct from the moment I was old enough for Barbie dolls. I wouldn’t play dress up with them I would paint new paint face on them, literally. I’d go through my mom’s or my sister’s little makeup bag and slap anything I could on my face (secretly of course).
It wasn’t until high school that I realized pursuing makeup was a thing. I didn’t have the best high school experience, so I used makeup to pretty much escape from my issues. I definitely knew that college was not going to be my thing, but I tried it out anyways. Higher education is really important in my family but when they came to terms that I wanted to go another route and have been rooting for me ever since.
I started preparing myself to be self-employed learning marketing skills and different makeup techniques. I was 18 when I met Christine from MakeupbyChrisTranx3 since then she has taken me to weddings to teach me everything she knows. She’s molded me into the artist I am today. Now 22, she’s become that one sister who has all the makeup! I will always credit her for my makeup career.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely not smooth sailing. But I don’t think anybody had an easy road getting to where they are today. I had to remind myself that. For me it was a lot of emotional struggles, constantly doubting myself and my work. Til this day sometimes I find myself unsure if my work is good enough; hence, why I’m always eager to learn to better myself as an artist. One thing I will never stop doing.
Please tell us about Beauty with Alicia.
I make people feel and look beautiful. With makeup and airbrush technology, whether it is a natural enhancement of a person’s features or full on glamour upon request, I can create any type of look.
Being able to have a creative mind and delivering it through makeup is something I’m prideful of because it helps me create a name for myself. I started my hustle young, I babysat to fund my makeup kit and landed an accounting job at a designing company to support myself when I didn’t have makeup gigs.
To which I still do till this day. I’m able to balance out makeup gigs and my two other jobs because I LOVE doing what I do. All of it. I come from a hard-working family, so hustling was natural to me. That is what sets me apart.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I’d take myself to Los Angeles and learn from the best of the best.
There are so many talented editorials/celebrity artist out there, and I would love to be up there with them someday.
