Today we’d like to introduce you to Reagan Kaalekahi.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Christmas Day 2001, I received a pair of clippers. I was completely unaware of the art of cutting hair. The only person I could practice on was myself. Having no experience, I had no options of anyone to practice on so I started cutting my own hair.
Before I knew it, my siblings and classmates would crowd my garage every Friday and Saturday morning. At the time, I was 14 years old. By the time I hit my 20’s, I questioned the advice of many which were, “go to beauty school”. I was hesitant because I was burnt out on barbering and I had never done women’s hair. As a few years passed, many other doors of potential career options started to close and then I knew it was time to go to beauty school.
I went through beauty school developing dreams and imaging where I wanted to live and do hair. I started in Seattle Wa, where I began my first three years specializing in haircuts and styling at the Gene Juarez salon where I had exquisite training and mentoring, after that, I knew to accomplish a dream of mine I needed to learn color, I then moved onto coloring at Chromatique salon where they taught me the importance of the foundations of color it couldn’t have happened faster they had a huge impact on my color journey. Spending three years there, I then knew it was time. September 17, 2018, I moved to San Diego, California which was my dream for at least six years I began working at Belle Sirene Salon where I have able to sharpen and fine-tune all the things I’ve learned and it’s been a great journey ever since. Dreams come true!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part, it has been a pretty smooth road, but even a smooth road has some potholes. The journey of being a hairstylist has an uncounted amount of ups and downs. Your beginnings are the hardest because you’re no longer working on mannequins where they have no opinion, no feelings or desires. You are now working on people and people have all those qualities plus more. The biggest struggle for any stylist is always first the communication. The communication between artist and client can be very confusing and the hardest part to learn. Aside from that, the learning of what we do is always curved it never stops evolving
